Feathered_IV Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I've got a bit of a problem. Every couple of months at random times between updates, both Il-2 and Rise of Flight will suddenly stop working. Most often it is the "failed to update" error that occurs on startup. Most recently, it has been a "Not a number or boolean value" error which crashes the game at the login screen. I've pretty much gotten used to this over the last five years, and routinely resign myself to having to do a fresh install for reasons unknown. Which brings me to my actual problem: Download speed. Updates and reinstalls are very slow for me from 777. Generally around 40-70kbs usually, with a brief hops up to 260kbs for a few minutes at a time. A reinstall can take days to accomplish, and leaving the computer running 24/7 is not an option. I've heard of people who migrate their Il-2 game to Steam, and wondered if that would help me? If I took the game (which I purchased here) to Steam, would I benefit from their faster servers, or would I still be receiving my downloads from 777 directly?
Field-Ops Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Since you pre-ordered BoS you should be able to get your key transferred over to Steam via the 777 support team. And yea you would benefit from the faster steam download speeds, as I do. You can also verify the steam game cache and that will sometimes fix issues on my end. Maybe your EXE gets corrupted? In that case I delete my EXE and verify game cache to get a new one.
unreasonable Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I switched to steam a while ago for the reasons you outline. Steam uploads are much faster for me - typical update takes just a few minutes, so I although I am not 100% sure that the uploads come directly from the steam servers - not being tech aware - the results are much better. Never had a "failed to update" error this way. I know a lot of people have a thing about steam but they are a professional distribution company - 777/1CGS are a game developer - there is no doubt who does distribution best.
Guest deleted@50488 Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Well, my installs of IL-2 are really fast, but in order to make them even faster, everytime I re-install IL-2 I use a external disk backup where I keep the latest version... It's a lot faster that way. And, it always comes to my mind that I really want to support 1C 777 the v«best way I can, so, buying from their store is certainly better option than through Steam, which takes most of the income ...
Feathered_IV Posted October 22, 2017 Author Posted October 22, 2017 Thanks guys, I appreciate it! I agree jcomm about the revenue. That was my biggest concern about going to Steam. I didn’t want to see 777 lose money over it. I think what I might do is see about porting RoF over, as development has concluded there; and try to take the frequent and lengthy reinstalls of BoX like a man.
56RAF_Roblex Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Do you have enough disk space, internal or external, to save a compressed copy of the game while it is still working? My install is about 30gb uncompressed. I am pretty sure that if you searched you might also be able to find some free software that would compare the two versions when the live one stops working. That way if you see something has changed that does not look like it should change, eg an exe or dll, you might know what is getting corrupted and can just keep that backed up and delete the rest of the copied files to save space.
KG200_Volker Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Something else that might help is the installation folder, for win10 mostly “they” say that program files folder doesn’t let some files to be overwritten and in result your downloads might fail, if you have Il2 there try to move it to a different disk or at least out of program files. Just C disk is ok. (It had happen to me too with another program)
Yogiflight Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 And, it always comes to my mind that I really want to support 1C 777 the v«best way I can, so, buying from their store is certainly better option than through Steam, which takes most of the income ... It doesn't matter, as Feathered purchased the stuff already from 1C 777, so if he migrates it now to STEAM, the team won't lose any money. And he can purchase all new stuff on the IL2 Sturmovik homepage, without any issue, just like I do. I purchased BOS and the FW190 A3 on STEAM and since then everything from IL2 Sturmovik, this works pretty fine. 1C 777 gets the money and I have the faster download speed plus the STEAM repair tool. 1
Guest deleted@50488 Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Ah! Thx for that @Yogiflight! I thought that once one migrated to Steam every add-on would have to be bought from there... Now, that not being the case, I might consider it as an option but, the only other sims I use Steam for are Aerofly FS2 and 1, X-Plane 11 and IL2-CloD, all of which have been uninstalled since I started concentrating fully on IL2 for prop aircraft simulation...
Yogiflight Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I am purely BOX flying since months, when TFS 4.5 is out, I will give CloD a go again. But why not use the advantages of STEAM?
F/JG300_Gruber Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I have BoS on Steam, and didn't got any crash on startup in 3 years. Updating is also a easy task. I think some already had some update failure with steam too (need to check in the bug report section) but for what it's worth, I never experienced such things. Download speed for me is usually between 0,8Mo/s and 1,1Mo/s. And up to 1,5Mo/s on a good day. Everything else (BoM/K, collector planes and campaigns) I bought directly from 1C 777 to ensure they have my full financial support. But every update is still made through steam which I find very convenient.
Jade_Monkey Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 I moved to Steam after BOS released and since then it has worked flawlessly. The speeds are great and there are no launcher issues at all. Malwarebytes would also keep flagging connections when the launcher torrent sharing was on, which was annoying since I got these popup windows from Malwarebytes when playing the game. You only need to activate BOS on Steam, and the rest on IL2 website. 1
HippyDruid Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 Yup, I migrated my BoS install to steam as soon as it came available. I've never bought anything IL-2 BoX related on Steam either, it's all been purchased through this site. I re-installed not too long ago, after getting the Rift - I have speedy interwebs (for Australia) - I think it took about 20mins to download everything again. I've been using Steam since September 2003 (I've even got the badge to prove it ) and I've never once had an issue with the service.

I run IL-2 through Steam for the brevity of updates and reliability of their servers but I make all of my content purchases VIA the website. Nobody loses their margin and I gain the benefit of downloading all of the updates from a server that is only 3 hours away geographically.
Archie Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 (edited) I didn't realise it all tied in like this. I don't have BOS yet, if I purchased it on steam can I add my copy of BOM (bought here) to it? Edited October 24, 2017 by Archie
LLv24_SukkaVR Posted October 24, 2017 Posted October 24, 2017 I didn't realise it all tied in like this. I don't have BOS yet, if I purchased it on steam can I add my copy of BOM (bought here) to it? I think it should work. Just log in in Steam BoS and BoM and anything you've bought from here should be available.

CAPSLOCK_ON Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 I didn't get this well... I also would like to benefit from faster Steam updates/downloads, but I have all my stuff registered to the Il-2 site and I have read that in order to use Steam you should have purchased BoS in Steam first place, so the subsequent (BoM and BoK) would be available as DLC to BoS. Has it changed and is now possible to transfer my BoS license to Steam (while future purchases still being via Il-2 site)? I own BoS, BoM and BoK plus a few of the collector planes, all of them I've got through the Il-2 site. Thanks.
Jade_Monkey Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 The people who preordered had a chance to get a Steam key after BOS officially released. However, I could be wrong, but I believe there was a limited time after which you couldn't do this anymore? It's been a while, maybe anyone who ever preordered can still get a Steam key.
CAPSLOCK_ON Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Oh, I see. I only got BoK on pre-order, while BoS and BoM I got after they were released, so I'm not eligible to the Steam version, I guess...
