III/JG52_Otto_-I- Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 Why we don´t have this rocket in game? The Rheinmetall-Borsig RZ 65 (Föhn) Bordrakete was a air to air missile. Designed and developed by Rheinmetall-Borsig AG in 1941 under the leadership of Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Klein. The Rheinmetall-Borsig RZ 65 (Föhn) Came in several different forms, wing mounted, nose mounted, there was even a version with a eight round magazine, The RZ 65A also known as Rauchzylinder (Smoke Cylinder) and had a diameter of 65 mm was superseded by the RZ 65B. Of which the diameter was 73 mm. The RZ 65 rocket was spin stabilised and used a solid rocket motor, which was then mounted as auxiliary armament beneath the wings of the carrier aircraft as a single launcher unit fitted to each wing. The RZ 65 was tested with the following aircraft He 111, Bv 137, Ju 88, Bf 109, Bf 110, Me 210 Despite the success with his weapon it did not enter serious production, and only a small number of operational aircraft were fitted with the RZ 65. However, development continued and an improved version, called the RZ 73 was used in small quantities.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 I think your last paragraph is pretty much your answer. 1
III/JG52_Otto_-I- Posted October 25, 2017 Author Posted October 25, 2017 (edited) I think your last paragraph is pretty much your answer. ...and quickly you have thinking what "small numbers" of the RZ 65 rocket means that they were less than the 40 Lagg-3 (34 series) produced who were equipped with NS 37, 37mm cannon that we have now in game. ..oh very good ! Why don't you dig up some solid numbers about how many of these planes were actually fitted with this weapon system and were deployed to the East? That would be a lot more productive, you know, than the reply you gave to HerrMurf. 1
THERION Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 (edited) Why don't we (whine, whine, whine... sniff)... I can't hear it anymore. I think, we should keep it realistic and not always asking for some very exotic things that barely left the construction bureau (so called paper planes/weapons). There are hundreds of projects that were actually tested (Erprobungsstelle), but never went into pre-production nor production. Edited October 25, 2017 by Therion 1
Finkeren Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 I think it’s a little funny that people who fly mostly German can’t wait to get air-to-air rockets (the BR.21 gets brought up ever so often as well) while people why fly mostly VVS and actually have access to historically appropriate air-to-air rockets hardly ever use them for anything except ground pounding.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Additionally, I don’t think we appreciate the amount of work that goes into unguided air to air rockets. I was a tester in EA. Rocket development was a significant amount of work over several weeks and we were just shooting and recording data on our end. To start from scratch, find historical resources and implement those digitally can’t possibly be worth the effort at this stage of development. I could be wrong but modifying a cannon on the centerline seems infinitely simpler by comparison.
sniperton Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 people why fly mostly VVS and actually have access to historically appropriate air-to-air rockets hardly ever use them for anything except ground pounding. Good point. I fired hundreds of rockets at German bombers when I was playing through the Stalingrad campaign, and I must confess that the results were miserable even though I flew with icons on (this way target range was not a blind estimate). A Hail Mary gun shot from 600 m is more likely to do some damage than a rocket fired from the same range, particularly when one of your eyes has to be on the 109s chasing you. BTW is there any tutorial how to use A2A rockets in BoX? Or any historic documents how and to what effect were they used in RL?
