I've just had a Steam VR update and then the Chaperone grid on permanently where before it was invisible. I presume the update defaulted it to on by mistake.

To switch it off:

Activate the Microsoft X-Box controller that came with your RIFT.

Start Steam-VR directly.

Enter the VR room via the RIFT.

Use the X-Box  controller to navigate the the Settings.

Drop the Chaperone opacity to zero.

Done.

I may be a little thick, that did not work for me. I got to a slider to increase or decrease the brightness, but it would not turn it off.

Try going into the Developer options in the settings and that should provide both a colour and opacity slider.
