Seeing I-16 controls while using TrackIR

Am I missing a trick?  The default view when using TrackIR in a Rata makes it impossible to see your instruments.  I usually resort to sitting up as high as I can then resetting TrackIr so when I slump down again I can see below the cockpit rim but then I need to sit up again to see the gunsight.    It is not an impossible way to work but is it possible to set up a button that allows me to duck and see the instruments while it is held?  I have tried but TrackIR always over-rules it.

Yes.  The Snapviews. Look under section 9.0 Cockpit Camera Adjustment of the BoS manual to see how to set up a Snap View.  The Snap View will override the TrackIR.

Set an aggressive y axis in tir

There is also a default view you can use by pressing the . (decimal point) key on the numberpad and holding it down. That will snap your view to the instrument panel (unless you've remapped that button of course).

I don't have a problem with it using requiems tir profile, there's more vertical range.

I have bound the decimal key on the Numpad to a Joystickbutton. Still, the sideslip indicator is hidden by the controlstick. Most other important instruments are easily viewable. I don't know if it is possible to move with TrackIR when using a snapview....would be cool though.

Is easy, you just are to be going like

Instructions for operating I-16:

Switch on engine.

Ascend.

Buzz around like a demented wasp annoying the Hell out of bf-109s and being all hard to spot and even harder to hit and all ...

Descend.

Switch off engine.

Real Rata pilots don't look at the instruments ;)

Edit: instructions above are really great!

What I have done with this (as well as a number of other aircraft) is by using the "set neutral position" instructions above, moved my head position nearly all the way back, in the I-16 this makes it much easier to see the instrument panel, and slouch down to see any that are still hidden.

Yep, if you are all the way back in the seat you can have a nice view of the lower panel of instruments

If you have TrackIR, you can move ahead and use the little openings at the sides of the gunsight to look at the upper instruments, like in this case the altitude and one of the temperature gauges.

And in the other side the RPMs and speed (there was a little bug while converting from the bmp file, or maybe it's that I got a secret build of the game with Kuban map winter edition???   :P )

Thanks for advice about custom head positions. I did not know that was there. The default '.' view is too extreme as you cannot see anything else but the inside of your cockpit but I have now set a button on my joystick that lets me look at the main instruments and still see ahead OK which is great for landing and take-off. As I was using an unused hat to do that then I also added in two views almost the same but slightly to right & left in case I need to look at instruments usually hidden behind the joystick eg 'flap position'. The last position on the hat now shows me 'above and behind' because my TrackIR always struggles a bit with that :-/

Leaning back does the trick for me. Using Aruco.

With TIR 6DOF it's possible to see most of the instruments, but it was the Rata which led my wife to the remark that my head and neck movements resemble those of an ostrich. Seems that RL Rata pilots had to decide between CEM and SA, just as curiousGamblerr noted...

Maybe they sat lower in the cockpit or could see the instruments better for other reasons. I can't believe that the designers of the aircraft put the instrument panel on a place that was hardly visible by the pilot. I can't see a reason that it was placed so much forward except for controlstick clearance. Then they could have made the glareshield shorter I guess.

As sim pilots we are very focused on intruments but IRL although they are important you do not strictly rely on them as especially for light aircraft it is most important to keep your attention on outside the craft.

Heck my flight instructor would often cover up all the instruments with a card

Yes, very true. I'm sure the real I 16 pilots got a 'feel' for their plane and how the engine was doing without looking at the instruments too much.

Yes I was a pilot IRL who did circuits without any instruments during training and is is not that hard but we lack many of the subtle cues & clues available in real life.
