This is entirely historical and is even described (and outright prescribed) in the manuals. Exactly as you say the idea is to get a greater "depth" of effective fire. This was important for all planes with a lot of wing-mounted guns, but extra much so for the Spitfire with its horrendously bad machine gun placement (very wide spacing for a very low and weak caliber) which - if all guns were aimed at one specific point - would have an outright awful depth of effective fire.

 

In particular the Americans did this to a great extent with their .50s since the punch of the machine guns meant that they weren't very dependent at all on hitting exactly at convergence to do enough damage.

 

Nah that was just for noobs and Americans :-P    Experienced pilots insisted on one convergence point because even a weak caliber like .303 will dismantle a 109 when all 8 meet in a small area.

Well, thanks in part to this forum, I now know that is not true. Both 109's and Fw 190's had different convergences for different guns. Many aircraft depended on harmonized guns as well. Some had staggered convergence as described. Still others had a general, non-specific, convergence - similar to harmonization.  It wasn't just, "us Yanks."

Well, I suffered from being given Ritalin at a young Age and suffered from severe Depression, Anxiety and Suicidal thoughts throughout my Teens most likely due to it.

I basically became dependent on it for Impulse Control and to "feel" Emotions. Relearning this took me years (And I'm still not very good at it), a time in which I gained weight and suffered from severe depression. 

 

It's a Hot Button Issue for me. 

 

Also: it's not thinly veiled, it's served on a Silver Platter. And the Points I make are pretty Mainstream anyways, at least in my Circles, and the Blue Pill thing was a shot at the pseudo-deep Stoner Philosphers.
