Footage from a successful 4 ship P-40 patrol led by 19//Tuesday on the WoL server the other day. I love those 6 x .50 cals ;)

That was a lot of spraying. Do you take the 4 guns option with extra ammo or do 6 guns really last that long?    I never fly the P40 because the engine is so temperamental and I have yet to work out how to get the best out of it without cooking it.      Loved that 109 being taken out by the bomb blast :-)

Looking at the tracers that was six guns for sure. With normal ammo load they have ca 10 seconds of firing time. With extra ammo you get a different amount per gun, but I think it rises to about 12-13 second for the inboard ones. 10 seconds is a pretty "normal" amount of firing time when you compare to for example the ShVAK and a 120-round magazine, and with the extra ammo you are starting to approach the firing time of a MG 151/20 with 200 rds (16 seconds).

Allows some spray&pray, but not awfully much.

Tuesday swears by 4 guns and no extra ammo for better roll rate. I prefer 6 guns and extra ammo because I'm a terrible shot.

6 guns firing at 850 rpm means you're throwing out roughly 85 rounds per second which is a horrendous amount of fire power for anyone unlucky enough to be hit by it.

Now that the flight model has been fixed the tricky engine management is worthwhile because the P-40 is such a nice and stable gun platform.

Yeah, the Russian pilots in general preferred 4 guns to improve the roll rate and reduce the weight (i.e. didn't take extra ammo either) as far as I've read, plus of course running the engine at higher power than permitted by the manuals just to make it more competitive. Engines were worn out in short order, but the planes did pretty well.

Personally I swear by six .50s. When I fire I want stuff to die.
