Fuel leak continues even after running out of fuel?

Got a fuel tank hit and the cosrresponding fuel leak, was far from base so started my flight back watching the fuel gauge, this is in a Lagg.

After a while it shows empty, engine stops, I am at 3,000 meters, and able to glide back to base after a long glide, and during all this time the fuel leak continued.

 

Something that would be nice for starters is to have the option to switch tanks, so use the tank with the fuel leak until empty then switch to the other tank.
