When we get the coop mode

He asked what was to stop someone developing their own hyperlobby style app for BOX. And I gave the reason. Missing direct launch capability to a server is the key.

 

Otherwise all you have is a glorified chat application.

Well, I have to say I appreciate this thread, before reading this it's clear I did not have a good understanding of what Coop missions meant (I thought it meant PvE, essentially).

 

Now that I have a better understanding, I admit it sounds like a great game mode. Being able to spawn set missions where everyone is "lined up" from the start, and committed to working as teams to achieve a set objective, sounds like a good alternative to what we have now.

 

Not that what we have now is worse, I love the idea of ongoing maps that you can hop in and out of, like WoL or TAW. But I can see how this "coop" style will reduce/prevent things like faction imbalance, and make for realistic scenarios.

 

It'll be nice to have more options for us, that's for sure. :)

Yes thats exactly what it is.  It's the best game mode by far imo. Best example again is lining up on the Hornet with your bros and flying  the successful Doolittle raid for 2+ hours, then "crashing landing" in "china" rinse, repeat ...

Of course, it's all about definitions. For me, coop is about a human "team" against AI opponents, for historical reconstructions or some sort of "narrative" designed by the mission builder. This we already have, and the flexibility of allowing players to enter the "coop" environment of the mission whenever they themselves are ready [individually] is a great step forward.

 

The power of having absolutely everything in the mission "triggered" by something else in the mission renders the coordinated start of old-style coops moot (unnecessary). In general, missions can be so much more intricate with the system we have now, compared to '46 or even the script-tastic CloD.

 

However, choice is always a good thing, and I'm really looking forward to having an HL or RoF-style lobby system.

I agree. Mind you ... it does not have to be all human vs all AI.. any mixture is also good. There were days when we would have 9 guys.. and days we would have 3 ... days when we had a full compliment on the other side.. or a handful... Having COOPs that can seamlessly fill the vacats spots .. coupled with good AI is the best thing for me..

Looking very encouraging. :biggrin:   

 

Jason and Han have stated that at first we'll be getting what is essentially the RoF coop mode which works well.   I like the look of the new gui - seems pretty straightforward to me. For squad use this will be fine.  For more general use, linking this to a lobby system - where Mr. John A. Player can see what is being offered - will be essential.  I understand this is being developed.

 

Wow, career mode sounds good too. :)

I agree with Arthur...encouraging.

A bit more even than I expected at this stage of development.
