What is your favorite WW2 aircraft...

Are these black specks on the wing (next to the engine nacelles) perforations? Does it transport pets in there?

IIRC they're walkway markings in the shape of footprints.

Interesting. Sort of "step here" instead of "step"/ "no step".

It is full metal construction despite its appearance. If Bristol was to make a Ju-52, this is what they come up with. ;) If it is as rugged as it looks, it could be a good liaison aircraft. But to take it in a bombing mission in 1941 must have been a harrowing experience.

To add to the list: The XF5F Skyrocket

Different in looks, but still great performance, better even than than the competition.

This thread reminds me of the epic crap planes thread on the old il2 forum. Any of you old hands remember that one?

Since we are beyond picking just our no. 1s, I'd like to name the Westland Whirlwind. That's a damn fine looking and quite unique aircraft.

My first pick would be the P-38, but since that is already taken, I'll have to go with the P-61. She didn't do much in the war because she was released so late, but I've always loved the look. I'm a sucker for two engine designs, and that turret on top means business!

The one with the funny ailerons.

whats so funny about them ailerons?

Posted

The small ailerons were only to give "feel" to the pilot's controls, the real control surfaces were spoilerons in the wings.

Very advanced really,  one of the many UFOs from Northrop.

Yep. No wingtwist. Worked well for the B-52 that has way too thin and flexing wings for traditional ailerons. The F-14 also uses them. On such a plane howver... rather exotic indeed!

The more glazing in a plane the happier I am.

This thread has some real monsters. I love em.

Here are few fairly obscure WWII aircraft to add to the mix.

Glazing? Too easy. What you want is a transparent aircraft:

WWI, but a nice attempt at stealth. Only foiled by the cellulose acetate covering having a tendency to reflect light, making the aircraft more visible than good old-fashioned fabric and dope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linke-Hofmann_R.I

The MB 5 could have been one of the finest fighters of the war and should have been the rightful successor of the Spitfire. Well, if Martin Baker had delivered just once on time...

Wonder Woman should have flown this plane in the movie.

The favourite aircrafts of the thread are...

1st place goes to: an eclectic collection of werid and ugly planes with something like 17 answers or more!

2nd place: Focke-Wolf 190 with a whopping 13 votes! Although the endless slapfights would be a good enough reason to split this to A-version and D-version and it's allies!

3rd place: Spitfires gain a total of 10 votes!

4th place: P-47 with 7 votes!

5th: The P-51 series with 5 votes.

6th: P-38 and Ju 87 share this with 4 votes each.

Then it all becomes a mess. At least 78 planes were counted for, and there were literally tens of pictures of some delirious horrors I did not really care about.

So congratulations, The Eclectic Collection of Weird and Ugly Planes, you are the favourite aircraft of WW2. Fw 190 can now have a civil war and Spitfire can do whatever 2nd runner ups do.

Transparent plane. cool.

Once you cross the front line, you can moon the whole enemy army from above.

ME109 (any variant) Ever since my old man described seeing them fighting above the skies of London against our Spitfires. Describing how they were difficult to fly, lightening fast but not a manoeuvrable as the Spitfire I've been captivated ever since.
