A_radek Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Very sleek. Much like the pre-war racing machines (macchi, supermarine). Polikarpovs designs did have some nice lines.Polikarpov ITPI-180-185

PatrickAWlson Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 The BV 141 looks like someone gave up halfway through building it. I get what they are doing with it. They want one engine. They want great frontal visibility. They came up with that. Just wondering if a pusher design wouldn't have been much simpler.

Just wondering if a pusher design wouldn't have been much simpler. As can be seen from the cabin design, they wanted great front- and rearward visibility, so a pusher design wasn’t really an option.

Holtzauge Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 The little known Gee Bee R3. Sadly only a few prototypes ever built. You can just see the muzzle of the 155 mm Motorkanone sticking out: Guaranteed one shot kills even on Spruce Goose. 1

Just wondering if a pusher design wouldn't have been much simpler. The visibility is only part of the design concept. The asymmetry is a consequence of optimising balance of a powerful engine on a light airframe and the resulting asymmetric blade tendency (P-factor). Weight balance and wing area ensured there was no roll tendency. The vertical stabiliser is offset more for tail-gunner visibility, rather than balance. Both low-speed and high-speed performance was stable. The BV-141 not the first asymmetric aircraft. Fokker built some slightly asymmetric aircraft in the 20s. However the BV-141 was pretty extreme. In the end, the LW went for the FW-189 as their main tactical-recon plane.
Leon_Portier Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 May I add the Heinkel Lerche, it looks like a rocket!
AndyJWest Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 May I add the Heinkel Lerche, it looks like a rocket! The Lerche was by no reasonable definition a WW2 aircraft. Or an aircraft at all. It was a fantasy project the Germans were entirely incapable of producing, like so many of their late-war wonderweapons...

AndyJWest Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Does the Bf109 Z count? It is two planes in one! From Wikipedia: Only one Bf 109Z was built, and it was never flown, having been damaged in its hangar during an Allied bombing raid in 1943. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_109_variants#Bf_109Z_.22Zwilling.22
Rjel Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 I love threads like these. Everyone dives into their libraries or online to find an ugly and/or obscure aircraft to claim as a favorite. Here's mine. 0be6ca45842d9f48eeaf1dcbbee40042--tarte-weird by Rick Miles, on Flickr

You can just see the muzzle of the 155 mm Motorkanone sticking out: Guaranteed one shot kills even on Spruce Goose. It probably does need droptanks to extend its range beyond the pattern of its home base. As for the Spruce Goose, all you need is to grow a line of trees and it cannot pass anymore. I give you the Fix It Again Tony G55 Centauro ... it not a Lamborghini but it close In the sense that you could have three Doras for for one such beauty, it is very much a Lambo if the Dora is Golf R32.

6./ZG26_Custard Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Its a product of its time, with everybody sitting on the far right-wing. It’s a good job it’s not being built in today’s climate by academic think tanks and being reported on by MSN because they would get it wrong too and just have them sitting on the far left Anyway, the Lizzie needs some lovin' too! 2
