Mine is the Ju 188. It looks like a Dragon Fly from hell. I love it.

Any Cobra, no contest for me. The first modern fighter - great visibility, engine behind the pilot, great aerodynamic design and focused on armament.

Ki-61.

good one, that is a seriously sexy fighter

On looks alone there is no contest at all. It's the MiG-3.

No other aircraft has such pleasing lines in such a neat, compact package.

I don't really know why the Grumman Avenger appeals to me that way, but it does. Maybe an old war comic I loved. Dunno.

I was about to chime in with the F4U Corsair, but as I looked through pictures and got its side profile... just no! It is super-sexy from the front, but in side profile it looks kind of like the F4F's 7 foot tall, retarded, inbred cousin.

I mean... just look at it!!

So, no. I'm going back to WW2's ultimate beauty with its infallibly perfect lines:

The P-38 is a strong contender for me as well, very beautiful design.

@Inkoslav

How dare you? :o:

Actually P38 is the ugliest plane in my opinion

I agree. Most of the American planes look fat and silly to me really. But then again I'm the guy who thinks Ju 188 and Fw 189 are sexy hahah.

Me-163 for me.

I literally refer to this rocket as "the cutest aircraft in WW2". I'd put it in my top 5 for sure.

phew.

A very close call between the Yak1b, 3, 9

and the Mark IXc Spitfire.

It has to be the Spitfire - with the Tiffy and the Mossie a close second and third

Spitfire IX or Mosquito

The Mustang for sure.

I love the look of slightly ungainly and quirky machines, so I think for me it's a tossup between the BV-138 C and the more conventionally beautiful He 219.

The Spit IX and the Mossie, yeah.

From the BoX inventory: Mc.202 and MiG-3 (as hounds), FW-190 and P-40 (as dogs).

But my weak point are flying boats...  Gimmie a Catalina!!!!

If aircraft that only reached prototype status during the war are included then without a doubt the DH.103 in the high-speed silver scheme is my choice (excluding the night-fighter variants which just look plain weird).

De_Havilland_Hornet_F1.jpg

But for production aircraft I'd go for an F4U with a heavily weathered 3-tone paint scheme, not pretty but looks totally bad-ass. Honorable mention to the Spitfire PR.XIX as well.

Has to be late model 109 for me, either Erla built G10 or K4. Almost all bulges cleaned nicely, beautiful Erla canopy, taller tail to give it balance, yet larger hood for more muscle looks.

Screen_160328_114938.jpg

There is many other to come close tought, clean yet purposeful looks of Kawasaki Ki 61 II, classic beauties P-51 D & Spitfire IX and more butal XIV, Hawker Tempest, Sleek FW 190 D models, etc etc...

It's kind of a stretch because they were built for WW2 but never saw action. But the Grumman F8F, to me, is the pinnacle of single engine piston fighter design. I like the R2800 powered planes... second fav is probably the bubble top P47D.

It's a toss up between the P38 or a later model Lavochkin product. Or maybe a dazzel painted buffalo.

Although, if you hadn't included the WWII part, I'd chose the SR71 without hesitation.
