NETSCAPE Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I have a basic understanding of the Luftwaffe organizational structure and ranks. I however can't find any information on what the common ranks were for non-pilot air-crewman, specifically air-gunners. I am assuming this would be in the NCO sergeant range like an Unteroffizier or Unterfeldwebel. Please correct me if I am wrong, thanks.
Juri_JS Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 Usually everything from Gefreiter to Oberfeldwebel is possible. Although there can be some differences depending on the aircraft and the time period we are talking about, for example early in the war an observer/gunner in a bomber might have an officer rank. Some radar operators/gunners in night fighters also had officer ranks. Moreover it's possible that technical officers without enough experience as pilots would sometimes fly as gunners. 1
NETSCAPE Posted October 8, 2017 Author Posted October 8, 2017 Ah interesting. Well specifically we are talking Jan 1942, Bf 110 gunner.
Juri_JS Posted October 8, 2017 Posted October 8, 2017 I think the majority of Bordfunker (radio operators) in Zerstörer units were NCOs.
