Hi,

Being a '46 user, I'm looking to use the Full Mission Builder in BOM. Can someone tell me why it is so incredibly difficult to use? I understand that the yuge variety of tools may be useful to a developer or map builder, but is such complexity necessary for the average user?

Is there a simplified way to use the mission editor for simple mission building a la 1946? All I want to do is place aircraft waypoints in certain places.

Thanks!

As a mission builder for IL-2: 1946 with a half dozen campaigns under my belt (Storm Clouds, Setting Sun, Green Hearts: Kurland) I've tried to get into the new mission builder and I've failed each time. I just haven't figured it out/had the patience to spend the time using it. Its not anywhere close to being as easy to use as the one that shipped with IL-2: Sturmovik. Mind you it also has a ton more features so that probably has something to do with it and the tool itself was never really designed to be used by the general population... more of a programmers tool that they made available.

It would be nice to see it cleaned up a bit but its way down the list on priorities no doubt. They have been busy in the last year either correcting mistakes from the early releases or adding some key features for the future. This one we can live with for now anyways.

So no... nothing available right now. Maybe later?

I have the same background, plus I used to be a DCG geek (although I’ve never published anything except some utilities to make DCG database editing more user-friendly), and I’m not totally incompetent in object-oriented programming either.

The ME can be learnt, it’s true. There are excellent video tutorials in French, and watching them you can get the hang of the logic behind the ME in 2 or 3 hours even if your French is poor or non-existent. The problem is that putting together (and testing) a simple mission in the BoX ME is much more time-consuming than it was in 1946. In 1946 we always complained that we can’t have triggers – now we got them in perplexing abundance. But using the ME for simpler tasks is not rewarding. It’s a powerful development tool on the one hand, but an overkill for the general user on the other.

It seems improbable that the devs would ever redo the ME, or that the QMB could be made more like the FMB was in 1946 (with waypoints set by the user, etc). In the short run I don’t see any other option than to learn the basics of the ME and to try to use it in an economic way.

Here are the vids:

Thank you for your replies!

Sniperton, I'll start with that video, though I don't speak French!

Is this a problem ridden simulator like CLoD? Will I have to spend weeks downloading patches and disabling drivers? Tell me honestly! I only have time to fly only a few hours a week, I don't have time for fiddling around unfortunately.

If you're having this much trouble with CLoD you're doing something wrong. Patches are applied by going into steam and saying you want the beta patch. All patches then download and update automatically. I've never heard any issues related to drivers with CLoD, though there is a known problem that if you have a GTX 780 that will cause BoS to crash because of a badly written Nvida driver. It should also be noted that after the 4.5 update - which is in release candidate testing now - you won't even need to apply patches by enabling the beta patch, it will just auto update.

You're welcome, I hope it helps. French has many words in common with English, and terms and concepts from the ME are called by their English name, so if you carefully watch what he clicks on and what he resets, and if you try to reproduce it by yourself, you'll be astonished how easy it is. Just do it step by step, from video to video. You can also find English language tutorial videos, but I found these French ones more suited to my learning style. Once you got the picture, there's a very detailed written manual in English to help you out with particular details, and the savants in the mission building section are really helpful, when you ask them for help.

Welcome to the club, baby!

For reasons I will never understand - I am a bear of very little brain - it was decide to have an FMB that is inconvenient to use, unintuitive, and lacking in any kind of fun. And it seems it's going to stay that way.

Hopefully the QMB will be given some life.

@CanadaOne, while I (almost) fully agree with you, we have a saying in my language, 'megszoksz vagy megszöksz', meaning that 'you can either escape or work out how to get adapted to it'. Tertium non datur :P:salute:

The other guy brought it up. I'm just giving him my opinion.

And to be fair, I will also offer the opinion that, notwithstanding the utter joylessness of the FMB, the sim itself is absolutely fantastic and he should buy every map and plane available because it's all great!

As said, I'm with you, and it's a pity that 'ordinary people' like we cannot provide SP content for our beloved game, since we prefer enjoying what we have to spending hours in the ME. I've spent many hours with coding in 1946, and I enjoyed it, but I'm too old to do it again. After all, I'm here for flying and not for the arcane knowledge of mission creation. My bad.

I hear ya, brother. This is a game and it should be fun. The parts that aren't fun will go unused. Namely, the FMB.

If I want to work, I'll go to work. At least I get paid for that. ;)

This was before Steam was the source for the mod downloads. Don't think I did anything wrong, and I would know because I went over everything with the guys at ATAG. In theory, it is simple to install as you said. The problem is that something always caused CLoD to crash. I've had serious trouble with CLoD on several computers, (As in, not even running at all until I found the magic trick, I literally spent weeks of trial and error, and then tech help on ATAG) and I had to spend several days with my brother who recently bought it to get it to work properly on his machine. Both of us have new, expensive high-end machines. We isolated the graphics problem to a sound driver in his case. There are a lot more ways CLoD can get messed up. Once we got it to work of course, we love CLoD!

I'm loving BOM for the most part so far, so I can see myself buying Kuban and the Spitfire in the future.

I'm still having very frequent crashes in BOM, but I'm trying to isolate where the problem is before posting in the tech support. It's just too random. Click a button and get a CTD. No specific button, as I said it's random. I get crashes in flight and in the QMB.   I'm no stranger to troubleshooting, but it seems I'm always stuck with these kinds of problems. Lol I have bad luck with computers!

Well, I've made it my mission to at least figure out how to place aircraft on the map for a larger scale battle. I'll figure it out eventually!

IMO it's important not to rush at the beginning. Recreate the tutorial missions one by one. Once all of them are working and tested, you can adjust them to fit your personal needs as simple training missions (transfer, formation flight, ground attack, bombing, etc). Later on you can combine them into something more complex by using groups. If you start with something complex, there's a high chance that an unnoticed tiny mistake will give you headache for ages until you can find the culprit.

Captain Dawson,

At the moment you are probably in the try it and see if I like it stage.

Once you have Track IR, and better still VR (oculus have permanently reduced price of CV1 to $399) I know it's subjective, but speaking for myself Il2 BoX + VR =  :good:, then I doubt it will take long for you to love this game to the point that you have bought everything, even the aircraft that you thought you would probably never fly, and still wish that there was more stuff to buy.

There are some very popular online servers, and the ones I've tried are all a lot of fun. See you in the skies !!
