jaydee Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Hi all. The Next Gen of VR is coming very soon. So hold off spending your money for few months. Better Res and a lot more ! This is just one of them coming !http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/samsung-announces-high-end-high-resolution-vr-glasses-for-windows-pcs.html
dburne Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I look forward to hearing reports on it, though I am not quite ready to shelve my Rift just yet. There are some nice looking features, but I am still not sure how it is going to do with PC gaming - will be interesting to hear. I don't think it is going to be able to handle the positional tracking/room scale quite like the Rift and Vive do. It is good for sure we have new devices on the horizon, and the competition will be a great thing. 1

SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Interesting. Well I don't care. I use the rift now, and in 5months when this comes out in Europe, I will use this. Because even current gen VR is better than my 4k screen.
OrLoK Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Well, if one is looking at a decent deal (Ie Black Friday), I wouldnt hesitate to pick up a Rift if simmin is your thing. Im not going to get excited about any new headset until they are released into the wild and we find out how they work in the real world.
LLv24_Zami Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 It`s good to have competition, but this was a complete turn off for me: "Granted, I was still able to see individual pixels, and the screen-door-effect (the space between the pixels) was more pronounced than I would have hoped given the resolution"

Not perfect, but a little better yet.(rift-19 pixels per degree, samsung-26, 8k pimax-38)

Cyph3r Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 It`s good to have competition, but this was a complete turn off for me: "Granted, I was still able to see individual pixels, and the screen-door-effect (the space between the pixels) was more pronounced than I would have hoped given the resolution" Remember it's still a significant improvement over the Rift and Vive Resolution wise: Rift/Vive: 1080x1200 per eye (1,296,000 pixels) Samsung Oddysey: 1440x1600 per eye (2,304,000 pixels) The 8k pimax should be better than Samsung in terms of this. Not perfect, but a little better yet.(rift-19 pixels per degree, samsung-26, 8k pimax-38) Bear in mind that the standard Pimax 8K is upscaling 2560x1440 per eye (spread out over 200 degrees FOV). The Pimax 8K X is the only one that does native 4k per eye (and requires 2 x DP connections and a hell of PC). For VR simming, I think the Samsung Oddysey will be a great choice. But for roomscale/general VR, the tracking of the Vive's lighthouses are superior, especially as far as controller tracking is concerned (the Samsung can't track the controllers when they're not in view of the front cameras).
LLv24_Zami Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 (edited) Remember it's still a significant improvement over the Rift and Vive Resolution wise: Rift/Vive: 1080x1200 per eye (1,296,000 pixels) Samsung Oddysey: 1440x1600 per eye (2,304,000 pixels) It is but not enough to get rid of the annoying things in Rift and Vive. Bear in mind that the standard Pimax 8K is upscaling 2560x1440 per eye (spread out over 200 degrees FOV). The Pimax 8K X is the only one that does native 4k per eye (and requires 2 x DP connections and a hell of PC). For VR simming, I think the Samsung Oddysey will be a great choice. Nothing else matters for me than getting a decent resolution and get rid of the sde. I`m not expecting any true 8k, just an acceptable image quality. Pimax is the best candidate for that atm. We`ll see soon enough if it`s true. Edited October 5, 2017 by Zami
Thad Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 I think things are looking good for VR! Upcoming new equipment promise ever better performance. Gotta love that.
BlznSaddles Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Thing is, we're gonna need another generation (at least) of video cards to be doing VR at these higher resolutions at any type of acceptable frame rates. It's gonna get there, but I don't see the "Complete Next Gen [HMD + GPU]" being available for at least another year for the bleeding edge folks and 2 years for the mainstream VR players.
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Ive been running my Vive for an awesome 1.5 years so far - waiting to see what Oculus and HTC put forward next before I jump on another headset. Possibly another year or so - given no details yet other than Valve showing the newer knuckles controllers - but Id be very happy if that was sooner.
