New to flightsims. Got an ir tracker to use in IL-2:BoS, but it's not working (in the game). Anyone have any tips?

Hey,

So I recently decided I wanted to get into flightsims, specifically IL-2:BoS. I went and got a joystick, throttle and pedals and realised I would have to get an ir tracker aswell.

It arrived recently, but I have been unable to get it to work in game.

  • I have downloaded, installed and updated the software for the ir tracker

  • The ir tracker works fine in the software

  • I sit in the dark, so there is no light disturbance.

  • I launch the ir software before starting the game

  • when in game, it doesn't seem to work except if I move forwards toward the camera, the camera in the game will move forward, but it does not react when I try to rotate my head, or tilt my head up and down.

  • when I'm in-game and tab out and look in the software, it seems to work perfectly

  • I tried to run the game in admin mode (I use windows 8.1) and it made no difference

  • Both lights on the camera are green in-game

  • I tried to run IL-2 with the "run as administrator", but it made no difference.

I'm not really sure what's wrong but I don't think it's the hardware or the ir software, I think there's something happening with the game and I don't know what. Any help would be appreciated.

One thing to check is that TrackIR recognises different applications and can apply profiles differently. If you are out-of-game, you may have a different profile to when you are in game.

I can't recall exactly where, but somewhere on the TrackIR interface there is a tab for the applications and which profile they use. Check in that to make sure that your TrackIR is registering correctly.

Also, in your TrackIR software, check that it is "seeing" the IR or IR reflections. Also turn on the indicator LEDs on the TrackIR sensor too, even if only to help with the debugging.

Do you use the track clip or the track clip pro (3 led device)? This is crucial, you need to select the correct device.

If you can calibrate and test your TrackIR in the TrackIr-Control panel without any problems then it should work

correctly in BOS - no matter if you run it normal or as admin.

Check if the light source in your room is not interfering with you device - especially if you only use the clip.

Having both green lights on is a good thing - the left one tells you that TR is active and the right one indicates

that you run TR in enhanced mode.

You mentioned setting the game to run as administrator, but have you tried making your TIR software run as administrator?  Way back, I remember having some issues with needing to run TIR with some sort of elevated priority - been so long since I got mine working that I don't remember the details.

I tried it just now, no change.

And you checked out the track clip box in the software?

Did you modify any key mapping - camera settings for instance? If so, to be sure nothing you changed will interfere

your TR, try to reset key mapping to default. That way you can exclude any misconfiguration of the head movement

of the pilot. It's worth a try.

when active the light in camera should light, I see you have F 10 as centering button, does this work

Have you also updated the games list in the TrackIR software?

The default curves maybe to shallow. Put up a new profile specific for BOS and try steeper curves.

I attached my profile which I also use for Rise of Flight.

Profiles go into: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Roaming\NaturalPoint\TrackIR 5\Profiles

1.   When you test it out of game and see that it is following you head turns etc OK, are you doing that while the official IL-2 profile is loaded?

2.   If it seems to work OK out of game with the official IL2 profile,  try locking that as 'exclusive' just to be sure it is not switching to a different profile when you enter the game.

I finally got it to work. Thanks for the help and patience guys.

Just a question. There are so many different options in the "key bindings" menu, and I was wondering if there was some sort of quick zoom in/out? When I scroll with my mouse for example the zoom isn't very quick, but from some people I've watched on youtube they seem to be able to zoom in and out the camera very quickly.

Thanks.

Yes you can set an axis to Zoom and you can adjust the zoom speed.   Mine is on the joystick hat so I hold the 'up' to zoom in and the 'down' to zoom out.

Look in settings -Camera Views- Camera Zoom
