In the specification for the Yak-1 thread it is said: Engine RPM has an automatic governor and it is maintained at the required RPM corresponding to the governor control lever position. The governor automatically controls the propeller pitch to maintain the required RPM. Are there any rules of thump which rpm are the best in which conditions? There is no hint regarding the best RPM.

1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 Official war guide for this engine stated simply go full prop and throttle. You theoricaly can gain some kph by reducing slightly rpm during level flight. You can gain approximately 20 kph by closing conopy and 6-7 by closing radiators (to maintain nominal temps). You can lose almost 10 kph if forgot to switch second gear from 2000 m up. Same leaning gradually mixtures above 4000m gives some more kph.
Finkeren Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 Yeah, the M-105PF is by far the engine that's least vulnerable to mishandling. It was basically designed to never go above its safe rating (which is why it is so weak compared to contemporary engines), so that it could be run practically without a care at full power and RPM all day long. In the long run doing this of course still would reduce time between overhauls and pilots were often reprimanded for flying entire missions at full power, but it was fairly safe to do so. Apart from heat issues and fuel consumption, there really is no need to ever reduce throttle or rpm.
