Is there any benefit to using the beta?

Downsides?

I remember seeing a post a while back warning to stay away from it, so I never tried it, but I can't remember what it said the problem about it was.

Yep same here, at one time it was warned that the Steam VR Beta was problematic with BoS.

Don't know if that is still the case, I myself am just sticking with the regular Steam VR.

I've been using SteamVR since I got my Rift and haven't encountered any issues with it. In fact, I feel that now, with the features added by the Beta, it makes a pretty good launch program for those games that are not native Oculus Home titles. Still not as easy as just doing it from within the traditional Steam Library list, but not bad. It's even more useful now that you can add a link to SteamVR from within the Oculus Home app list. This allows you to seamlessly hop between game launchers during extended VR sessions and playing different games.

What does the beta version do that the normal version doesn't?  I don't have any SteamVR games other than BoS, and I can already make all the settings and start BoS effortlessly using the normal SteamVR version, so what would I gain from the beta?

Indeed. Performance?

It takes all of one click to enable or disable it, don't even have to restart or reboot. I would suggest you check it out for yourselves but of course as always, your individual mileage may vary.
