New cockpit shadows are excellently done

Just needed to get on the forum again to thank the devs for putting so much care into this series. There are no other devs like them that I'm aware of.

Flying in an IL-2 and the new shadows they added a couple updates ago are remarkable. It seems every structure in the cockpit that can cast shadows, casts shadows. High detail.

Totally agree, I geek out over the shadows pretty much every time I play now.

I haven't even tried them yet. My GTX 760 2gb is having trouble as it is. I have to keep the hud off to get a constant 50fps. Do the new shadows hit harder on performance?

I haven't noticed any performance hit with my new rig (i7 GTX 1080).

New shadows are excellent.

No, if you choose the right setting.

There are four settings for shadows now, try it out which one works for you. Ultra setting is way above the earlier shadows, so it`s very hard on the GPU.

I really didn't think the new shadows would do anything for me and thought it was a bit of a waste of time better spent elsewhere.  Boy was I wrong.  They make a world of difference for some reason.

The ultra shadows put the hurt on my GTX950, but I find them a bit distracting anyway. Down a level (or two sometimes) they look great and seem more natural (to me) and the performance hit is acceptable.

BOX has ruined me for other flightsims. The graphics are as addictive as they are delicious.

Yes indeed, the new shadows are fantastic!

I run on the High preset ( in VR) and have my shadows on Ultra, really nice.

Same here! When I saw it in the change list I was like pft whatever, I only cared about outside shadows for tactical reasons... uh yeah, we were wrong. I'm gonna get myself killed gawking at them. 109 E-7 is my favorite to look at so far... Those shadows on all the gauges in the evening... is it getting hot in here?

The shadows, everywhere including the cockpit are a huge improvement to the quality of experience. I'm very pleased.

Shadows add so much. Didn’t realize what we were missing!

They transform the landscape - that 'fake' look is gone, especially when the sun is at a low angle.

Cockpit shadows and seeing your own shadows out there are really really nice!

Cockpit shadows and the exterior shadows (your own) are really nice!

You know I haven't turned them up to the max but even on the lower settings the visuals are much improved and extremely impressive. The work that the devs do on this to take things up a level is impressive. Can't say enough good things about the work here.

At least in VR there's a pretty heavy performance hit with ultra shadows.  Performance is better with shadows on medium, but they seem to look better on high (and something in the DD/patch notes talked about some of the new shadow benefits only being available on high setting), so for now I'm running with high shadows and just living with the FPS hit.

Shadows are great, both internal and external.

I won't mention the time that I was setting myself up for booming the enemy aircraft below, before realising it was my own aircraft's shadow!

I agree. The shadows make a very noticeable improvement. Ever since Jason introduced the "Spirit of '46" each update and decision has been a real winner.

I agree too. Much less flat and lifeless now. (The mirrors are also very cool).

I really like the new shadows and my old system does not seem to lose any Fps on high or ultra. It is really nice that the moving jaggy shadows are completely smooth and believable in motion. Nice work 777 Team.

Cannot believe I Just noticed this

Now that it has been pointed out to me I look for them all the time

And they look frikkin Fantastic

This seems to me like one of those things you think you do not need

Then when it is there you may think "Meh"

But then you play a sim without them and instantly think -

Where the hell are my Frikkin Cockpit Shadows?

Excellent work Devs :salute:
