Damaged Wing

I found I was able to fly pretty far with a severely damaged wing. If my engine wasn't so damaged, and I had kept my flaps down I think it may have got me back to base, about 10 km's away

That is not a 'damaged wing'!   I flew home and landed with this :-)

The diary entry for that mission is in the link below.

Nicely done, yes the IL2 is one tough bird. fighter wings tend to fold pretty quickly when you get the first sign that they are about to give. I really think if I could have maintained about 200 kph, I might have got back to base.

Yes. One of my sorties a couple of days ago resulted in at least three fighters losing wings within 5 seconds!  See the link  https://roblex56raf.livejournal.com/26503.html   Boots destroys a 190s tail then immediately has his wing removed by another 190 . At the same moment Cina damages a 109s wing and that wing comes off as the 109 dives but he still manages to take off Klems tailplane before crashing and that causes Klems spitfire to lurch and overstress the wing causing it to come off. :-)

It's happened to me more than a couple of times, that I've flown home with a wing that was partly torn off only to have it snap off right at the moment of touchdown. Apparently the bump from the landing was the last straw.

IL-2 several times for sure, and I think maybe MiG-3 and LaGG-3?
