Facing of Pilot head

This is not about aligning the default forwards view...  what I want is an external view of a cockpit with the pilot's head turned out to the side looking over his wing, while he makes one of the gestures.

Can I control where the pilot is looking in external view? I does not appear to match what I am doing in the cockpit view using TiR, either in real time or in a track.  So I cannot match up the gestures with the sideways look.

Any ideas?

Sorry, don't want to offend anybody - but - do we really need such things??? I mean, it's supposed to be combat simulator, isn't it?

So why should anybody bother or even think of wasting resources to implement things like this?

There are other, way more important things missing / malfunctioning (although only a few) that need some fixing. Or I am completely

wrong?

I would like the pilot to be able to flip the bird.

If pay $1 for that. :)

Using the hat switch at least it used to track those movements, try using the numpad or something to look around.

If I mapped that to one of the buttons on my joystick, that button would wear out in no time.

 I am not asking for the developers to do anything - I am simply asking if it is possible given the current state of the game.

OK something like that works but you have to put the camera into snap mode first - in pan mode for TiR you just move the camera around.  That was the stage I was missing - thanks for putting me on the right track.

One of the three gestures is pretty close to that - wrong finger, but I doubt anyone would notice. Save your money. :)

A dollar I have.

You know what would be grand - if you shoot someone down online, and you fly right past him in his chute and flip him the bird, his screen automatically gets delivered a "snapshot" of your smiling face and you committing the gesture. Costs a buck on your account. The devs might like the cash and I'd be happy to pay.

What's the point of blasting a guy out of his plane if you can't bask in the glory of the moment?

The head in the external view looks where you are looking with TrackIR. It just doesn't turn further than ~60° in either direction.

It is a nice little detail.

That is what I thought. Unfortunately, it does not.

edit - let me be more specific: it does not do so reliably. What with all the sore back stretching, nose wiping and bum scratching animations the pilot does whether you want them to or not, they might get around to your TiR triggered head movement when they feel like it.

Mine looks pretty reliably, but it's not a very extreme movement. If you are looking directly behind you, his head will be turned at most like 80 to 90 degrees.

To me it looks more like PointyPuffin stated, not more than 60°. But you have to turn your head before you go to external view, because when you are in external view, the head doesn't move anymore. Only the three gestures are done by the pilot then.

I have tried sitting in cockpit view, then slowly looking right, left up and down, while recording a track.   On replaying the track, looking at the external view, the head is not reliably matching the TiR movements made while recording. It seems to get stuck sometimes. My pilots have a stiff neck, as well as a runny nose.

I can probably get the right facing eventually, I suppose it will just take longer .... anyway thanks for all the suggestions.

Depending on what you're doing, maybe you could just Photoshop it? Since it's already a digital scene, I bet you could get away with something passable.

Edit: "while he makes one of the gestures" makes me think you want video, obviously my solution only makes sense if it's a picture you want

It is a video scene. Actually, there is an equivalent to photoshopping - it is possible to add layers to videos. If we were talking about RoF it would be fairly easy, or BoS with the canopy open, but with the canopy shut, and all the reflection effects it gets much harder to make it look right. Might work if the viewer only gets about a second to look.

On the one hand I think it's a waste of resource if this is technically a difficult thing to do.

On the other hand it would be super cool to look across to your WM at the spawn point in MP and see him looking back at you, see him leaning out of his his cockpit on the taxiway etc.
