=BKHZ=Furbs Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 DayZ standalone started yesterday, a early access alpha.... 2 million players already.
FuriousMeow Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) I played DayZ, it was fun for a while. I can't see myself buying the standalone, since from what I've been told it's just ArmAII (or standalone on III now?) with all of the best mods put together in one package. So pretty much paying for DayZ that I could have just by getting all of the best mods together, creating a server, and releasing that mod pack. And zombies, meh. I liked the survival part, and that was the draw for me. Then it became PvP with zombies in the background and my interest meter quickly went south. I think it captures the gaming environment quite well, everyone's a numb zombie buying all of the same games (even Battlefield3/4 are CoD clones, compared with Battlefield 2 they are an embarrasement) that pretty much do the same thing. I hope Star Citizen or ELITE provide something different, something with depth, especially since I backed them and put money into them. Edited December 17, 2013 by FuriousMeow 1
steppenwolf Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I like the zombie-survival concept, but dang ARMA is a clunky game. Enjoyed the free to play ARMAII version for a bit, but again engine's just so behind on the times; even III is. Too ambitious, but good luck to them.
Revvin Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I've played the original mod quite a bit, run a server and played several spin-off versions of DayZ so I bought the standalone version yesterday. I've come this far with it and I'm interested to see where it goes from here.
Cybermat47 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 The only zombies I'm interested in are the ones from Halo. They're actually pretty unique compared to the ones that are all over the place now.
Sim Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Enjoying DayZ SA so far.. and love the customization. Still, I wish they went with Arma 3 engine. Walking inside the buildings is still a nightmare (just like in Arma 2).. Here is my bad ass character that managed to survive for a while now:
kestrel79 Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 I never played the mod, but this concept looks pretty cool. I was holding out for the SA game so looks like I'll pick this up with some xmas cash. But yes I agree ARMA has always been super clunky to me control wise. It's like they made it clunky on purpose to be "more realistic and tactical".
Sternjaeger Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 brave choice to go out with a Mosin-Nagant
6S.Manu Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 I've played with the mod for a pair of months. The concept is great, but there are/were some features that make it totally pointless. - Some immature players ruin your "survival" experience: they don't want to survive, they only want to troll other players. - Pro players who run with min graphic settings to spot easily the other players (taking away shadows and grass) - Bugs inherited by the Arma Engine (dying because you try to strafe inside an house at you 20th day...) - Hackers everywhere. I'm a good guy, I usually want to socialize with people: there is not possible and you have to kill at first sight to not risk your like.Is the standalone version any different?
Marcomies Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I've played with the mod for a pair of months. I'm a good guy, I usually want to socialize with people: there is not possible and you have to kill at first sight to not risk your like. Is the standalone version any different? First thing is, the standalone is currently in early alpha (and will probably be for quite some time) so you can currently expect more content, stability and balance from the mod. That is something to think about before you spend your money on it. Externally the standalone might appear just repackaging the mod and selling it but in reality most of the work so far has been done under the hood (the game has been entirely re-written on modified version of take on helicopters branch engine). It also looks better with higher fps than the mod so there has been some nice optimization already. -In my experience, the situation with 'shooting on sight' is a little better than what it was/is in the mod. I have had quite a few friendly meetings with armed players and even some teamwork. You still usually die by some player's hand but the situation in much closer to what it was during early days of dayz mod when it had about 10 000 users or so. Don't know where this will go in the future however. -The graphics settings don't affect the spotting as much as they used to, low setting trees/bushes are even more obstructive than high setting ones and I don't think you can remove grass. High shaders/post-processing still makes the game look and feel like a walk home after a long evening in the bar though. -Running into people indoors and hitting yourself with a door isn't lethal anymore. Accidental suicides overall seem to be almost nonexistent (pros of being actual game rather than a mod). Old arma limitations/problems in general are much easier to overcome now that the devs have full access to the engine stuff. -So far I have seen no hackers. The old dayz was a hack running in heavily mod friendly engine with awful BattlEye anti-cheat. Standalone is going to be much stricter on player input and will be using VAC. I'm personally pretty optimistic about the standalone's future.
Wolger Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 The hack prob was the main reason I stopped playing last time. This standalone thing is new to me, gonna check it out.
MarcoRossolini Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I tried it... but I prefer my games to be grand epic nation vs nation contest of wills... Post-apocalyptic worlds just depress me.
Jaws2002 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I tried it... but I prefer my games to be grand epic nation vs nation contest of wills... Post-apocalyptic worlds just depress me. Same here. I just couldn't understand WTF is going on, when I log into Arma3 online and I see 90% of the servers running some sort of zombie survival mission. You got all that cool kit and weapons and people like to run around with an empty 12 gauge shotgun and some 7.62x51mm ammo in their pocket. .
Emgy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 (edited) - Some immature players ruin your "survival" experience: they don't want to survive, they only want to troll other players. I was watching a DayZ vid where the uploader and his two friends bandaged a random guy they found bleeding in a city. I thought "hey I'll post this link, such a feelgood video." Then at the end of the vid, the random guy comes back with friends and kills the uploader & co... Edited December 23, 2013 by Calvamos
Emgy Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 I just thought the contrast was a little humorous.

I thought "hey I'll post this link, such a feelgood video." Then at the end of the vid, the random guy comes back with friends and kills the uploader & co... See? And what about: A: "I'm a noob, I've no weapons: can you help me?" B: "Of course: take my pistol and some ammo" A: "Oh thanks!!!" B: "You're welcome. Have a good ga...." BANG BANG!! A: "LOL! And thanks also for the rifle, the backpack, ect... NOOB" During one of my first sessions me and four of my teammates were camping inside a forest, over an hill: with were "cooking" some meat when somebody started to shot at us probably with a pistol. After 4-5 shots he stopped and disappeared, so we though he was escapedm since we didn't see him. So after 5 minutes we were walking into a valley when we see a single guy running in the opposing direction at 300m: I was the only one with an assault rifle and my friends forced me to shot at him since "he is THAT guy". I fired and killed the player: looting his body we discovered he had no weapons... I felt so bad... my friends still mock me because of that. Edited December 24, 2013 by 6S.Manu
Wolger Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 The survival map is called Wasteland - which actually contains modified mission files - only need one time download when joining a Wasteland server. Works like a mod but isn't. Looking forward to the new DayZ as I found out ARMA3 works so much better on my system showing it's highly optimized.
Creepermoss Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 The standalone, the game we're discussing here, is using a modified version of the Arma II engine, rather than Arma III's.
Wolger Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Wait I thought the new standalone is using the new engine and currently one of the most played on Steam. Not bad for an early access Alpha game. Always prefer zombies as enemy so they won't able to shoot you from afar.

z0ttel Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Hi, this might be slightly off-topic: I'm looking for someone located outside Germany who could gift me this game via steam. The reason is that I want to avoid getting a 'cut' version of this game. Please contact me via PM! Thanks!
z0ttel Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 ... who could gift me this game via steam.... Of course I'll pay for it (just to avoid any misunderstanding)
