TexasWarbird Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 Hello, I just had a quick inquiry on the P-40 cruise speed. I noticed it can reach 220mph no problem cruising. But upon researching a bit further, I notice the cruise speed is usually listed around 290mph; I usually struggle reaching anything close to this cruising without combat power. Is there a reason for the lost speed and engine preformance?

BlitzPig_EL Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 (edited) The speeds I'm seeing in my P40 operations manual for optimal range cruise speed are all in the low 200s IAS depending on altitude, and aircraft load. Edited September 17, 2017 by BlitzPig_EL
indiaciki Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 (edited) Yes, they are. Have you seen the intructional film? I think it's a newer model but the video is great. 12min - mixture for cruise speed. Edited September 17, 2017 by indiaciki

Is there a reason for the lost speed and engine preformance? What are your Settings? What's your Altitude? Radiator Position? RPM? Manifold Pressure? Canopy Closed, Gear Retracted etc? You are aware of the Difference between IAS and TAS? Edited September 17, 2017 by 6./ZG26_Klaus-Mann
US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 (edited) I usually fly at 70% rpm using autorich, and keep the manifold at the high edge of the yellow. Rads at 25%. Generally that gives me a cruise of about 250 IAS at 10k feet. Which I think puts me close to 300 TAS. Edited September 18, 2017 by hrafnkolbrandr
TexasWarbird Posted September 18, 2017 Author Posted September 18, 2017 (edited) Yes, they are. Have you seen the intructional film? I think it's a newer model but the video is great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUcqbytR9Ts 12min - mixture for cruise speed. Thanks that video was great, I didn't account the rad position accounted for so much ether. I usually kept my rpm at 26k or 73%. But out of habit I constantly kept my rads open at 25%. Which usually put my tempts around 45c constantly. These numbers sure helped. This bird flies great at 4% rad at around 80-76c. Seriously a completely new experience. Used auto rich and She crawled right up to 290 IAS no problem. The responses here are golden; Thanks for the help! Edited September 18, 2017 by TexasWarbird
