Geleitzug Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Does anybody have a list available of the pilots flown in the Jagdgeschwader 51 during the "Operation Barbarossa" ? I am primarly looking for the IV. Group members and here not only those who achieved air kills...
Juri_JS Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 (edited) I don't think you will find a full list anywhere on the internet, so some work will be necessary. If you are only interested in the Barbarossa period, I would first start to check the claim lists. A 1941 eastern front claims list can be found here:http://www.don-caldwell.we.bs/jg26/claims/tonywood.htmIn contrast to later periods when the great majority of victories were scored mostly by the same experienced pilots, you will notice that more low ranking and less experienced pilots were able to score victories at the beginning of the war in the east than during other periods. I think for the first two or three month the majority of active IV./JG 51 pilots appears at least once in the list. Some newly arrived pilots without prior combat experience are certainly missing and maybe also some technical officers, because they rarely flew missions and had less opportunities to score victories, but you might be able to find their names when checking the "Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries" by Henry L. deZeng IV and Douglas G. Stankey, which can be found here:http://www.ww2.dk/lwoffz.htmlI would also suggest to take a look at loss lists, although I don't know where to find the lists for IV./JG 51. Geleitzug Posted September 18, 2017 Author Posted September 18, 2017 (edited) Geleitzug - I have a full list of air victories and losses for IV./JG51 for 1939-43. What is Your field of research? Hi Panzer, thanks for your offer... Actually I've got a picture from a private photo album that shows a ditched Bf 109 F during the early stages of the Operation Barbarossa; since the soldier who did the photo was at that time linked to the "Heeresgruppe Mitte" and his documents says that he was in the Orscha / Smolensk region around this time, and as well from the paint scheme of the plane I am assuming that it was from the IV./JG51 (I would say that there is the JG51 "logo" visible even though it is not fully visible due to some soldier sitting on the cooler hood and the additional small "Balkenkreuz" at the rear part of the fuselage); my research is to find out who was flying this plane at that time and what was the further history of this 109... Since the rudder of this plane doesn't show any victory markings it will be not pretty much helpful in this case to go through the victory lists of JG51 (which I have available in the JG51 chronicle book), so my idea is to look for a general list of JG51's pilots and planes...
