Music in a scripted campaign?

  1. 1. Would you want music in a scripted campaign?

    • no, it would kill immersion for me
    • yes, but only at the start and end of the campaign
    • yes, a reoccurring theme every mission sounds nice

I compose and produce soundtrack style music for fun and do commission work on occasion. I had the thought about making a few pieces of music for my next campaign.

On the minimal side I could make some music for the very start and very end of the campaign.

On the heavier side I could make some music at the start and end (when landed is detected) of every mission. This could be a theme and then it could vary slightly depending on the feeling of the mission.

By default I believe orchestral music would fit the bill the best.

What do you guys think?

You could also introduce a few cinematic missions between actual missions, using the AI and camera operators. For instance: tanks entering a village, planes flying over a convoy, sunset over the sea, misty morning in the mountains... music would fit well in those.

hmm that's an interesting idea!

Music is a very personal thing, tastes vary so much.  I like it, but I also like the option to turn it off if just not in the mood or it is not to my taste.  No idea how easy it would be to give an option.

Generally I would not want it from the time I get into my cockpit to the time I get out.

Well it would be similar to music you would hear in a movie. No dubstep.

Keep it short and keep it skippable.

Although you may be a maestro there'll always be some who don't dig ingame stuff and simply want to cut to the chase.

I often find myself playing the music from Wings of Prey when I fly or simply an audiobook.

So, i'd be happy to see (hear) it ingame :)

I cannot make a button or something to stop the music.

In 46 you could use takeoff and landing music and all kinds of other music really. I used to use the Where Eagles Dare movie soundtrack for taking off.

That is good to know at least. This game is the first flight game I've really gotten into, so I missed out on those days.

So I just did a little test with the Bf 110 E-2. It takes around 0:50 for your first engine to fire up after hitting your "start engine" key-bind. And at around 1:40 your second engine fires up.

There for I would never want to exceed 1:40 because the music needs to stop before you or your flight lead calls the tower for taxi permission.

I also could stick to a rule of 50 seconds or less of music before take off. This would ensure that the music cuts out just in time to hear those glorious engines fire up.

Asking if we like music is a bit like asking someone if they like colors.

Are you planning on something from the 40's or AC/DC?

Just pick something appropriate and don't overdo it and you'll be fine.

Broseph. I already said it would be orchestral. It will be like soundtrack music you would hear in a movie or some video games. There is no picking it. I will create it.

I'm working on something right now. I haven't worked on music all summer. Either way this music will be good and a sample for possible clients to hear. So if this doesn't pan out for IL-2, not a prob.

When I have a decent mix I will post a sample for you all.

I voted no. It would indeed make the immersion go away for me and there's something else:

It's something of a time thing I guess.

It used to be so that when my daughter came home, she put on the radio in the living room and went up to her own room.

I'd stand up and kill the radio.

Half an hour later she comes down and start that radio again. Goes to pour in some coffee (gives me a cup too :-)) and proceeds up again.

I kill the radio again.

So I asked her why she puts on the radio all the time.

The look in her eyes explained it to me: She cannot imagine someone who does not want to hear music or sounds all the time.

I worked in the navy my whole life and was a crew member of ASW helicopters. That gave me enough sound and noise to last 30 lifetimes.

In short: I'd like to hear the engines, the ammo exploding, but no other sounds then those that were there.

No music,....please...

What if the music stops by the time your engine starts? ...of course no music during battle or anything of that nature. Games like this and first person shooter the player needs to listen to sound fx for important ques.

I hope that you can make it optional.

As previously stated I can't. Thanks for your input.

Nothing is for certain yet. Making the campaign is the main focus first. Then I apparently have to become a novelist and write a story to go along with my missions. I haven't wrote a "story" since high school. So that should be interesting haha.

Ok, I'll tactically remove myself from the frontline.

I'm looking forward to more campaigns made by you, as the Stuka campaign is awesome.

If music is there, so be it, as it's you who's the author, so you decide. I'll decide if I'll play it when time comes.

Good luck with the new campaign.

Hey bud I hope you didn't think my "thanks for your input" was being sarcastic. It wasn't mean't that way. I made this poll and thread for player input and that's what you gave me.

If you've got a talent for composing (and it seems you do) then I would say go for it. That will be one of the things that distinguishes you from other campaign makers.

The optionality was partly why I suggested to do it in separate cinematic missions. People who dislike your music can terminate the mission early. If you set the primary objective as achieved right from the start of the mission, it shouldn't prevent advancing in the mission.

I can also understand the "unimmersiveness" of music during the mission, even if it's not during the action. It makes you feel like you are watching a movie, rather than being a pilot in a plane.

There may be another way to do it: IIRC you can make a flash media and play that instead of playing directly a music file. That might let you handle the interruption in Flash, or maybe the game itself can handle that. I have never done that, so it's uncharted territory for me and I could remember it wrong, but it's worth mentioning.

Heroes of Might and Magic III. Best game score ever. There are actually some tracks from it that I have great ideas for IL*2 cinematic videos but I have no idea how to make videos:(

I would probably have already made some cinematic IL 2 videos for YT to compose music to it. But my FX8350 doesn't equate to the best frame rate at times so I leave the video work to others.

I did contact "ZETEXY CHANNEL" of youtube in regards to cutting a trailer for Sirens of Death. Then I would have composed music to his video. He was too busy on his own projects though.

If you are using the Media MCU to play audio, just know that you cannot fast forward time in game.

Some people dont have a lot of time and prefer to speed up some parts of the flight, so take that into account.

I started playing around with the camera translators. I am thinking I will make a cinematic intro sequence, a mission before the first mission. It would be about 2 minutes long. I realized there are many missions where if the player doesn't hear the SFX while in parking - it does really kill immersion. If people don't like it they can hit escape and click finish mission.

I'd post the song I've been polishing up but I think I may be breaking one of the forum rules by doing so, ie advertising myself. So I won't risk that.

It isn't self advertising if it relates to the game, and in this case you're planning to write music for your campaign so it's definitely related :)
