Smouch Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 (edited) I know the A-20 will be added to the planeset, however IIRC it was classed as a medium bomber/attack a/c. I think that the Russian set could do with something heavier. Maybe something like the Pe-8? Just a general question really. Edited September 13, 2017 by Smouch
Finkeren Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 The Pe-8 was an exceptionally rare sight on the Eastern Front, less than 100 built total. Almost universally used at night. For a heavier level bomber, you basically only have the IL-4 that really fits the timeline of this sim, and that is still lighter than the He 111. Heavy bombers was just not a hallmark of the Eastern Front. There is also the TB-3 of course, but that is really just asking for Luftwaffe target practice.
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Ahhh... but think of the TB-3 coop dogfights. I remember them fondly. 2
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Making evasive manoeuvres on that bathtub was life back then.
CanadaOne Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Gotta love the 5000kg bomb on the Pe-8 in IL2-46. Would be nice to have it here as well. 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 The only really larger bombers in the Russian inventory in WWII was the IL-4/DB-3 and the B-25. The Pe-8 as Finkeren points out was a rare bird and not frequently used. Strategic bombers or "long range aviation" in Russian parlance were seldom used. Battlefield support was more the focus in the east which is why there are so many Pe-2s and much less of the other types. As for other bombers... I don't think you'd get any argument from any of us for new planes. We all want more options and the devs are doing their best. Jason did say recently (I'm paraphrasing) that he'd love to do lots of different types but they have a business to run and a multi-crew, multi-engined bomber takes a huge amount of time to do. The A-20 is smaller and less complex than the B-25 or IL-4 and its still taken the team many months to put together. The A-20 is going to give us some fairly serious firepower. Up to 1800kg (4,000lbs) of bombs compares well to the Pe-2's 1000kg (2,200lbs) and aircraft like the B-17 which could carry up to 6,000lbs (2,700kg). That's about all we can expect right now for bombers. Maybe more in the future! 2
1CGS LukeFF Posted September 13, 2017 1CGS Posted September 13, 2017 What is with the weird font in the OP?
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 You mean this one Luke? Go the more options tab under the quick reply pane, then at the top you have the choice of different fonts. Even classy ones like this. As to the A 20, I think it will be a game changer for the VVS, because it will bring some parity with the He 111 and Ju 88, and because of it's speed will be a hoot to fly. I'm really looking forward to it. It will be a fantastic "hit and run" plane for deep strikes at high value targets.
Field-Ops Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Man an IL-4 sounds lovely. Maybe one day. Perhaps when the devs go back to eastern front someday the 1944 planeset can include an IL-4. I'll be happy with whatever I get though.
US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 The A20 is going to be fantastic. I can't wait to see those things streaking through the clouds.
JtD Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Let's not forget the Tu-2, which would be a bit of a stretch within the current scenarios, but so was the Fw190 for BoS. Awesome aircraft, certainly a step up from the Pe-2.
-=PHX=-SuperEtendard Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 The night bomb argument would also apply to the IL-4 though. At least for what I read after having most of the SB bombers slaughtered in Barbarrosa (thanks to mostly daylight low altitude unescorted sorties), the rest of the bomber force was kept for nightbombing from then on (SB, DB-3, IL-4, etc). I think I read that around half of all the bomb tonnage dropped by Soviet bombers in 1942 were at night by these ones. The Pe-2 was the main daylight bomber. Feel free to correct me though would like to be wrong because it would make the IL-4 / DB-3F more appropiate to complement the Pe-2.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 The Il-4 was the DB-3, DB standing for long-range bomber. Though it still participated in a lot of daylight sources (especially by the VVS-VMF near Kuban, Leningrad and Murmansk in mine-torpedo regiments) the bulk of them were used at night while tactical aviation handled the thick of daylight action. The next daylight bombers to arrive in numbers were the Tu-2 and B-25 in 1944, but that doesn't fit our timeline. Despite the wish to carry big bombs, having dissimilar plane sets helps add a specific flavour to each air force in game. In the times where level bombing is needed, the A-20 and Pe-2 are capable of dealing enough damage even if they don't have 2000kg bombs for Hollywood explosions.
Pharoah Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Ahhh... but think of the TB-3 coop dogfights. I remember them fondly. lol yes. So much fun in '1946. Load up two big lumbering TB-3s with squad mates and battle it. Took forever to shoot down but the amount of laughter it generated was classic. I'm currently reading a book called bomber pilot on the eastern front - the author started in 1940 and flew IL4s pretty much the whole war. Rose to SQN CMDR as well (I haven't finished the book as yet). Anyway, 90% of his missions were at night.
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 JtD, is right... I forgot about the Tu-2. That came later. But yeah what an awesome bomber! I hope to see that one some time as its never been a flyable type in any series that I've played. And yeah.. the TB-3, what a hoot. I played a co-op battle where we loaded up two TB-3s and had a "dogfight" with the gunners shooting back and forth. Incredible fun. Also did a lot of SPB teamups on Battle-fields UK with I-16 SPBs strapped under the wings with bombs. It usually ended up going badly but man that was nuts
hames123 Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Whats wrong with night bombers anyway? This sim has nighttime in it. Imagine a night time PO-2 or IL-4 campaign, attacking trains or supply convoys that have come to the front to resupply the enemy, too avoid artillery. Or maybe a nighttime attack on an airfield. Or dropping off supplies to partisans. Or nighttime recon. The possiblities are almost endless.
[TWB]80hd Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 No Pe-8 means no FAB-5000, and no FAB-5000 would not be very fab at all.
1CGS BlackSix Posted September 14, 2017 1CGS Posted September 14, 2017 Something interesting about Tu-2... Battle of Kuban, May 1943, 4th Air Army, 12th BAP (285th BAD 2nd BAK): 6
sniperton Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Wow, you mean the Tu-2 is an option at least theoretically? Hmm, I envisage the next poll
Yogiflight Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Yessss, give us the Tu-2, can't be too difficult, looks like the Pe-2, just with another gun station.
Lusekofte Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 The TU 2would be great, but I think we shall not have our hope up
=ARTOA=Bombenleger Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 (edited) Yessss, give us the Tu-2, can't be too difficult, looks like the Pe-2, just with another gun station. and vastly more power and carrying capacity and better defensive armament, basically a pe2 on crack... i can hear some people crying already. Edited September 14, 2017 by =ARTOA=Bombenleger
JtD Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 basically a pe2 on crack... More like a Ju88 on steroids, just like a Ju88S.
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 In the original IL2 the Tu-2 was flyable in modded versions of the sim. It was a formidable weapon.
