=WH=PangolinWranglin Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Are there any good books people can recommend about night combat in WWII preferably one that isn't about the Night Witches? I'd like to learn about night flying that wasn't done in a Po2.
Chief_Mouser Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 I've always liked this one - Night Fighter by C.F. Rawnsley https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0907579671/ref=rdr_ext_tmb It describes the introduction and development of radar in RAF night fighters from a personal perspective. Rawnsley was radar op for 'Catseyes' Cunningham, the RAF's leading nightfighter pilot. A very well-written and interesting account. Cheers. 1
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 (edited) If you know Polish language "Lwowskie puchacze. wspomnienia lotnika " by Jerzy Damasz - its about 307 Polish Night Fighters Squadron fighting during Battle of Britain. Edited September 13, 2017 by 307_Tomcat
Gunsmith86 Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 (edited) Battles with the Nachtjagd the night airwar over Europe 1939 - 1945 Theo E.W. Boiten and Martin W. I found a copy several years ago in the free bin outside of a bookstore and rescued it.
Feathered_IV Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Terror in the Starboard Seat by Dave McIntosh is very memorable. He was an RCAF navigator on Mosquitos doing night intruder ops. He was a very nervous young man, with the misfortune of being paired with an extremely gung-ho pilot.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Enemy Coast Ahead by Guy Gibson has lots about night bombings.
Chief_Mouser Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 I cant' recommend this one highly enough - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Other-Battle-Luftwaffe-Versus-Command/dp/0785814183/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1505470169&sr=1-3&keywords=the+other+battle 'The Other Battle' by Peter Hinchcliffe. Thoroughly researched and highly detailed account of the night war over Germany, from both sides. My copy is in a box while I redecorate. Now that I've remembered it I think I'll read it again - once I find it! Cheers.

Retnek Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 Enemy Coast Ahead by Guy Gibson has lots about night bombings. Be sure to get the latest edition, the "2003 reprint". It's not that much different, but adds imho important aspects. I was very much impressed by his writing, such a clear-sighted position. Put down to paper so well while fully in combat service, a truly exceptional man.
[DBS]El_Marta Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 (edited) Len Deighton's book "Bomber" is also available in full length "for free" as an audible tryout: link Edited September 17, 2017 by [DBS]El_Marta
