Knee board and map edit in game

Recommended Posts

Hi fellows,

Do you have any information about the knee board and map edit in game?

Does the DEV team mentioned about this 2 features before?

Map edit can help us to mark the current postion and draw a course, like in Arma.

Knee board maybe need a polit body in cannopy first, but we dont have it now.

Of course, BOK is the first, our great DEV team are all working hard on it, may not have enough time to develop these features, so do we have any mod can at least help us to do the map editing in game?

Yes check out that app. It is really good. If you fly with a second PC or a tablet beside you then you can indeed mark your current position and get a new heading to the target or home.    You make a flight plan by putting waypoints on the map and it then gives you bearings & times.  If you find yourself off course after a fight or avoiding enemy patrols you can just drag a waypoint to your current position and you will instantly see the new bearing and time to fly.

Not sure if this is on the cards for the future. Hopefully one day we will have a better in game map system but for now this is a very useful app that can be used on a tablet or smart phone.

Yes The mission planner can help us a lot, I usually make a level bombing plan by using this mission planne, this tool is great!

It's gonna be awesome if devs providing a editer like il2missionplanner.com.

Even the ability to draw a line on the in-cockpit map would suit me.   I often get lost and when I find where I am I wish I could just draw a line from my current position to Target/Home so I could keep track of the landmarks I should pass.

Or even just a marker on the map because sometimes when I find where I am and close the map,  I open it again a minute later I have to search again to locate where I found I was last time :-)

Haha this maybe confuse all of us , but a planner can indicate us a planed course and a relevant land mark, so we just need to follow the course between 2 waypoint, this can reduce your work on navigation, usually I set 30-40km between 2 waypoint, this can help me not to get me lost.

Oh of course, we need to consider about the wind direction when we follow the course, otherwise you may be blown off, lol

Just having the flight plan drawn on a kneeboard map is enough for me, but I definitely want the map to switch to an "in-world" map instead of the GPS overlays and full screen we have now. I think they could even get away with not having a pilot model to put the knee board on, just make it float above the seat and not blocking any instruments or controls.

Definitely, an ingame inclined kneeboard with il2missionplaner-like capabilities would please both VR and non-VR users...

I like the way it was implanted in ROF.  You could have a small map at the side to keep your bearings.

:good: Yes, this is what I'm looking for in VR

FYI there are some guys experimenting with an overlay in BR. I believe they are using a $15 product but seem to have gotten the mission planner running as an in game overlay in VR. I'll try to link the thread later when I'm not on mobile and it's easier.

I'm also meaning to try it with steam overlay but haven't yet.

Hi CuriousGamblerr, thank you for your mission planner, I heard from a friend that the mission planner can become a small compass and can be used in the MP server.

He said the compass on the map can show us the angle and other things, is that real?

Could work for VR. Basically keep the full map to zoom and manipulate it to your needs for your current mission, and then when you close the map, you see it on your "knee" position or wherever it may be showing the same info as when you last configured it on the full map

The troubles is that now we horrid VR users are in game the devs have another layer of thought to consider when adding anything to the game.

Personally im happy using my mouse in VR although i prefer a "tabbing" system like Elite uses.

That said, id need a shift command on my stick as all me switches are used up. ;)

In my humble opinion the in-game map issue is one of the biggest drawbacks in the game. Even the two possibilities in the old 46 were better, the small window and the transparent map. I commented about this long time ago when I first switched to this sim but I didn't get many replies. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the future because flying and the suddenly pressing O and getting the whole map and losing the cockpit is not a very good solution. And yes, I also would like it in the full real.  :)  Please Devs, do not get offended by us and correct it in future patches.  ;)

Maybe not a popular opinion, but I think bringing up the entire map screen is actually more realistic TBH.

I have a little bit time flying real planes, and whenever I looked down at the sectional chart it seemed to consume my entire field of view...to the point at least where I'd have to be trimmed out and flying straight and level before looking down. I would hardly try to maneuver and look at the chart at the same time only to fail at both :)

probably not good practice. you still have to fly the a/c and you get to use your peripheral vision to do so. Trimming out the a/c is a good start.

RL mil pilots use a kneeboard or something similar (unless they have a B/N who does it for you or a TAD or something, but they still take their maps for backup i understand).

Stumbled over this post looking for a knee-board solution. I'm aware of the VR enhancer MOD, that includes a knee-board, but that's locked for most multiplayer servers. Basically, an easy way to show pictures, charts, a user-editable map or flight plan while flying in VR. Something like this.

It doesn't have to be editable in flight, a folder to drop pictures would be perfectly fine.
