Playing the stock campaign, I can't find the enemy, I can't even find my wingman

any advice on setting changes that can make things a bit more obvious? I still want to play under CEM conditions, no arcadish HUD or map

is there any command to get the direction of enemy targets? something like CLOD radar contacts

There is also some radio chatter but I am struggling in getting a vector to follow

any other tip?

We all have some version of this problem.....

I have found that you have to pay scrupulous attention to where you are, especially that your course matches the vector required on the briefing map since AI actions are often triggered when you enter a zone.  Also look for AA bursts, if applicable: they are usually easier to see than distant aircraft.  Ground control was pretty primitive in the E front setting, compared to UK home defense, so the lack of it in BoS is realistic.

The orders menu has a "return to our mission order" - I have not used it recently so I am not sure how well it works, but I recall in Rise of Flight I used to use this (or a similar order) to make the AI take over command and follow the waypoints, which allowed me to just tag along.

Finally, you could try to set up your HUD so that it only shows object tags, with an easy to reach key to turn the HUD off/on. Then you could turn it on occasionally to help you spot distant aircraft. I have to do this sometimes now that my eyes are going. :(    Unfortunately you will also get the incredibly annoying "The HUD is closed, press H to reopen" message that we have complained about for some time.

Assign a key (the same key) to the first three commands on the "Engine" tab in Settings/Controls.

This will switch off all engine automation and you'll have full CEM even in "Normal" difficulty mode.

You can also switch off the instrument panel with a special key found on the "Service" tab. Unfortunately, this will also switch off object markers, but without the annoying message mentioned by unreasonable.

BTW, @unreasonable, what do you mean by that: "Finally, you could try to set up your HUD so that it only shows object tags". I cannot figure out how to have object markers without the instrument panel and the GPS map in Normal mode.

That might be because I always use Custom mode.   ;)   The OP is talking about SP so has no worries about artificial difficulty limitations.

Settings, Flight interface.  Untick every single box, set in game messages to none (gets rid of tech cheats), MP messages to off (if you do not need a translation of the radio messages), minimap off, instrument panel off.  With the HUD on all you should get now are the coloured names/range indicator dots. Unfortunately at the moment the game is bugged and the compass - but not the speed - reappears when the HUD is closed then reopened.   But since the OP is getting lost perhaps this suits him.

Edit: I might add that the GUI is horrendous at the moment, and seems to make up it's own preferences from time to time making it hard to select a set of markers and sticking with them when the HUD is turned on and off.  Normally I do not care about this since I use the clean screen approach nearly all the time, but I like to use the distance markers when filming from a track to see where things are before turning off to screen capture, and the disobedience of the HUD is annoying.

Thanks, got the picture.

I too use the Custom mode whenever I can, but unfortunately it's not available in stock campaigns.

I don't have eagle-eyes and have a relatively small HD display, so Expert mode is out of question for me. You cannot fight what you cannot see... A simulation game should require the same skills, but not the same abilities as RL combat flying IMHO.

I'd be happy with Expert settings, provided I were allowed to have some visual aids beyond a certain distance. In old Il-2 object icons were customizable. I mean something like this:

- no object icon within 500 m

- coloured object icon from 500 to 1500 m

- grey object icon beyond 1500 m

Perhaps one day

Try a couple of the scripted SP campaigns like "Ivan's War".  Not only are the missions much better than those the old campaign produces, but you can use custom settings.

I do not think there is any way to change icons/object labels by distance, unless someone has worked out how to change a config file somewhere.  It would be a good idea. The problem is that in the early life of this game the developers were obsessed by multi-play fairness, whatever that is, and took out much useful functionality and choice from the game so that everybody would have the "same experience".  Fortunately, they have changed their approach, but with the understandable emphasis  on revenue generating content this kind of feature is not getting much attention.

I believe, however, that the new career mode that is on the way will offer free use of whatever settings you like, from the current range of possibilities. (it had better.... ;))

Yep, hope dies last. The 'same experience' mantra is funny, everybody should have the same equipment and the same organs to have the 'same experience'.

Here it was just myself thinking I was blind. 27 inches doesn't go far when simming with no aids.

I do try the campaign non the less as such and there are a couple aids to help:

Radio chatter with wingmen calling out enemy planes and relative position.

There is the map with hud on which will show you in black and vis enemy flights in red.

For ground attack, it is map local, flak and direction enemy assets are pointing that help determine what to attack.

I must work on my aa busting though with using the wingman hold position command to bait the aa as I clean it up before attacking.

I wonder how the dynamic campaign system will work and or using PWCG would be better.  Also saving up for VR.  If sticking with monitor it would be easier on 40 inch up.
