Campaign difficulty

Hi All,

I'm looking for a way to play the single player campaign with custom difficulty. Basically, I want all the difficulty of 'expert' but still have the ability to use external views.

I've tried a search of the forums and have found a few discussions about this but haven't yet come across a definitive answer as to how this can be done for the campaign (I already know how in quick missions).

Thanks

You can't - plain and simple. The preset difficulties are a relic of some of the poorer design choices made early in the game's development.

Fortunately you can play the scripted campaigns with any difficulty setting you like, PWCG too and there is hope that the new career mode will be free of the presets as well, but that is yet not confirmed.

Thank you very much. Yea that was my next question, whether or not the new career mode will allow it (like RoF does). Fingers crossed it does because as much as I enjoy multiplayer I find it a bit underpopulated and I'm considering buying Il2 1946 just for the dynamic career.

Some servers are more popular than others, quite often have to queue for some of the ones I enjoy, but I guess a lot depends on your time zone.

Thers is some sort of way around. You can use 'Normal' difficulty and take all the helps, like engine management out through the settings. For deleting the automatic engine management, you need the first three keys in the engine settings and turn them off. Same is for aiming help, which should be in the weapons settings. This should do the job for you.

Unfortunately this is one of those all too common bad decision made by the developers that, for some reason, they can't see contribute to holding this sim back from being a success.

For what it's worth, for the campaign, I fly the missions on "Easy" settings - but I have the engine management aids (the first three settings under the "Engine" tab, I think) all mapped to one key, so as soon as the mission starts, I can turn all the engine aids off with a single keystroke. Then I basically have "expert" engine flying, but with all the icons, navigation aids, etc, ready if I - ahem - 'need' them (and want to cheat!). Otherwise, I turn the icons off, and now I'm trying to fly with no HUD at all, as much as I can. The thing is, the visual aids are still there, if I get frustrated, or lost, or get that 'life's too short' feeling as I lose yet another bandit against the forests in the background!

Yeah I was gonna ask the same thing. Being a "newb" of sorts to IL2, I wanted some of the help, like the icons, but wanted to do CEM myself, looks like I should select Normal and then just turn off the auto CEM switches, which I already have mapped to my hotas. So all good, I know I'm "bad" for using the plane markers but ID'ing the planes looks to be a pain in the butt and I am playing for fun. :)

I think it was the devs preoccupation with multiplayer that made them think SP players might need such things.  I hope they've learned something for the upcoming career.

Shibbyland,

I started the campaign in "Normal" and what I was doing was using the "H" key to remove everything, signs on the airplanes, and the HUB disappeared. But I still had expert views so that the long journeys were not so boring. And when I reached pilot level 10 I put the campaign on EXPERT difficulty. The Expert mode gives you twice as many points, but if you do not want to die easily stay high and only attack when you have it very clear that you are going to fight only with one enemy. Well, there are times when a whole scouter follows you alone.

In addition there is another thing that not many do not know about the Campaign. When you reach pilot level 10, the missions become more complicated. For example: At pilot level 5 or 6 there are only four fighters waiting at the target point. In the level of pilot 10 there are four fighters in the target, but on the way you go crossing enemy formations that sometimes go higher than you and other times fly lower. I am at the pilot level where I am: 13 in the missions that I do, which are always "escorts" of bombers I cross with two or three enemy formations along the way (Pe-2 or IL-2 escorted by fighters), and then at the end if your target is close to an enemy base, there are four fighters and sometimes two more formations appear at a great height that are supposed to land at their base, but at the end they dive They join the fight. And this is where you have to run, because the normal thing is that they have already killed your friends fighters and you are alone against 8 or 10 enemies.

I to top it off sometimes that arriving at base or halfway back to base appear two more fighters. If you have spent all the ammunition for wanting to have many demolitions you have to see how they bring down your bombers or your fellow fighters. DO NOT SPEND ALL THE BULLETS

Good luck
