Jaws2002 Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 (edited) This morning, at 12.02 UTC (08:02 AM), the sun spot 2673 shot a massive X9.3 solar flare. For few days we got hit with a bunch of M class flares, but today we got two X class one after another. http://www.solarham.net/ Edited September 6, 2017 by Jaws2002
Jaws2002 Posted September 6, 2017 Author Posted September 6, 2017 (edited) I just uploaded a video from SDO. This one is massive and earth directed! Now it all depends how bad the coronal mass ejection was to see what kind of damage it can do. We may get aurora borealis all the way to texas. Edited September 6, 2017 by Jaws2002
coconut Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Should I be worried, or just enjoy the show tonight?
Jaws2002 Posted September 6, 2017 Author Posted September 6, 2017 (edited) It all depends on how much coronal mass this one sends our way. They are still calculating that. It could be just a cool light show, or we could get massive telecommunications disturbance. I doubt it will fry power grid transformers, but that's a possibility as well. The flare happening from an area that's facing earth is not good. All those fast charged particles hitting the atmosphere could cause weather disturbance as well and the timing is not good for all those in the path of the hurricane. Jaws2002 Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 (edited) The coronal mass ejection shot by yesterday's X9.3 solar flare just hit us, and it's spectacular. It hit a 3 hour "k index" of eight, something i didn't see in quite a while. http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/planetary-k-index I wish it was not cloudy tonight here, because we should have a nice aurora. Here's the aurora map and as the magnetosphere gets hit by fast, charged particles, areas with clear sky, maybe as far south as southern Illinois, should get a nice light show. http://services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/animations/ovation-north/latest.jpg Most of Canada will get his one. LLv24_Zami Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 Damn, too bad it's very cloudy night here in Finland. Would have been great show by looking at that map.
Jaws2002 Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 That's for sure. I live in the most southern point in Canada, at 42.3149° N and i'm sure we should have strong aurora tonight, but it's cloudy. We are officially in " G4" level geomagnetic storm. Her's more info about possible problems caused by a storm of this magnitude: http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g4-severe-geomagnetic-storming-observed G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Impacts Power systems: Possible widespread voltage control problems and some protective systems will mistakenly trip out key assets from the grid.Spacecraft operations: May experience surface charging and tracking problems, corrections may be needed for orientation problems.Other systems: Induced pipeline currents affect preventive measures, HF radio propagation sporadic, satellite navigation degraded for hours, low-frequency radio navigation disrupted, and aurora has been seen as low as Alabama and northern California (typically 45° geomagnetic lat.). And the sun shot another three high M class flares and one X1.3 flare since the big one. I didn't see the sun so active since 2012.
Jaws2002 Posted September 8, 2017 Author Posted September 8, 2017 Cameras picking up aurora as far south as Arkansas. and this are from Finland http://spaceweathergallery.com/indiv_upload.php?upload_id=138948
