single player campaign - I want your input.

I have made one campaign based on StG 2 (Stuka's) over Stalingrad. Those missions are based on historic events. In the briefing I write a short historical background for each mission. The campaign spans from summer to winter with gaps in between missions as long as 2 weeks. So I felt the "story" driven style of Ten Days of Autumn wouldn't work well with it really.

I am now working on a campaign based on ZG 26 (Bf 110's) during late January 1942 (BoM). The Campaign will take place over 4 days of action. This time around I don't need to research and write a history lesson each mission. In the same spirit of Ten Days of Autumn, I will attempt writing a "story" in the mission briefings to increase immersion.

Now on to my predicaments and questions for you guys...

My normal method is to name the planes of you and your comrades the same as their call names (ie: Raven 2). I have outlined some characters for the story/briefings. I had the thought it would be neat to name the planes after the pilots from the to-be story. So when the pilot talks over the radio the text would for example show up as "Müller" or "Schulze" , rather than "Raven 2". The message would still include their call name as well as the audio, example "Raven 2, engaging enemy fighter". So in essence it would say in text "Schulze" - then right below that, txt stating "Raven 2, engaging enemy fighter" along with the normal audio message that doubles the txt. Hopefully that makes sense. If not I could whip up a screen shot.

The issue with this is if "Schulze" gets shot down or killed, it would seem silly to hear about him in the story on the next mission or the mission after that.

To avoid this I could make your comrades (3 other pilot/gunner duo's) invulnerable to enemy fire. Which might seem kind of silly to see them shot up but not show any signs of damage. I could make a comrades plane vulnerable for a mission specifically so it fits the story properly, if the story calls for someone being shot down or killed.

On the other hand if your comrades get shot down in a mission but the next mission briefing doesn't mention that all three of your mates went down also might seem kind of odd.

I'd like your input on that. Would you think it would be cool to see their name in-game and in your mind correlate that to a character you have been reading about? I think it would be. However the workarounds I mention above might seem kind of stupid to some people.

I won't be disappointed at all if you don't like the concept/idea. Because I can continue doing it "normal" just like I did before with no major problem, other than your comrade being reincarnated for the future missions/story line.

So, to clarify, the audio you hear, and the actual transmission would be "Raven 2" and not "Schulze", correct?

If so, I'd say that's fine. But real world, you're not going to hear names, ever, over the radio, just a tac-callsign.

That is correct.

I think the only way that would work is if you were able to tie the name written in the chat bar with a pilot name generated by the campaign.  Otherwise the discrepancies after someone gets killed would be too immersion breaking.

Better just leave the name out. (I try not to get too emotionally attached to the AI - it never ends well ;))

I don't know how you do it lol. In every game EVER, I get too attached to the AI and trying to keep them alive...

Actually Sailor lots of VVS pilots (especially over Kuban) used last names, nicknames and first names occasionally over the radio.

About the campaign, some balance can work out. I'd suggest trying to speak of characters who are harder to kill, like mechanics, commanders or squad mates who don't necessarily fly together all the time. Debriefs and plots who don't necessarily rely on one guy or another being alive are useful too since, you know, people dying is the daily routine after all.

Indeed, I have a CO and mechanic character noted :). I can't give too much away about the story outline, but there will be casualties.

Nice to see ZG26 featuring in a campaign setting NETSCAPE. Very much looking forward to seeing how it turns out. :salute:

Netscape - I only named the flight leader and co-pilot.

Flight leader was invulnerable.

Everyone else I left alone for reasons you mention.

Making everyone invulnerable wasn't an option as far as I was concerned.
