Pulled the trigger on Oculus Rift - Ram question

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi

System is i5 4670k O/C to 4ghz , GTX 1070 and 8GB of DDR3 1600MHz ram, MSI Z93 -G43 mobo

Would more or faster ram be a worthwhile investment ?

If so can anyone recommend any...I'm thinking of 16GB and something like the link below budget wise but open to suggestions

cheers

Couldn't find that MB on MSI's site (they had a Z97-G43 but not a Z93-G43), but if your MB will support it you might want to consider moving to some higher speed RAM (maybe DDR3-3000, if your MB is a Z97-G43).  That should give you a few extra FPS to play with in VR, based on what what folks are reporting in this thread:  https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/29322-measuring-rig-performance-common-baseline/

Not sure just going from 1600 to 2400 would buy you that much, but it's hard to tell what any given person would consider worthwhile.

Have you run the VR test/benchmark in that thread on your current rig?  What kind of results did you get?

My mistake yes, its the Z97-G43

I saw that thread previously and its slightly headache inducing

I'll guess I'll give VR a go in my current spec and see what happens

Yes, it is a bit of a mess but the important is only the first post where instructions are given to run the test.

People who run the test is collected here:

In your case I would run the test to see actual performance (if you don´t have the rift yet you can run it only in monitor).

Or if you don´t have too much time you can run only the free tool Passmark test and report CPU Mark and Single Thread Mark (STMark)

Your 4670K has a STMark of 2195 at 3.4Ghz (https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-4670K+%40+3.40GHz&id=1921)

At 4.0 GHz you would have an STMark around 2450 (a 0.1 GHz step gives you about +40 increase in STMark)

So, your CPU would give you about 65 fps avg for the test (or maybe lower because low RAM speed), but from the CPU point of view would be valid (for Balanced graphics and High perhaps).

If I were you I would go for a DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) kit as fast as possible, higher than 2400 if you find it. You will notice it in your fps.

You don´t need more than 8GB to run IL-2 at High settings.

I have a 4670K O/C to 4.2ghz, and with 1600 MHz DDR.  I've no issue flying in BoX.  See my specs in my sig.  My CPU mark is 9266, (via Passmark rating).
