CanadaOne Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 It is indeed one of the nicest flightsim maps I've seen, and a great map to just jump into and explore, but... it would be nice if a bit of life could be added to its QMB status in the future. The airfields have a ghost town thing going on. A few populated airfields would be great. Just one or two for each side would be a nice addition; some static planes and objects, a few moving vehicles, and some AAA. It would be fun both for the airfield attack option, and for the enjoyment of taking off and landing at an airfield that feels more alive. 3
Ribbon Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 (edited) Well this map made me start learning mission editor, if i could create campaigns(scripting and such) in Arma3 ME than with a little more work and patience maybe i'll catch up with il2 ME. Some great missions could be done in mountain region, expecially when devs improve AI (for mountain region) as they said. Until that happen maybe guys running Berloga could juice up things with moving fight into the mountain region. Edited September 5, 2017 by EAF_T_Ribbon

Just like Battle of Moscow before it... once we get the campaign/career mode going this map and the entire aircraft set are going to really come alive. Battle of Moscow was ok in early access but once the map arrived and we had the campaign mode to play...things came together and it was (and is) wonderful. I'm sure the same thing will happen here. And fairly soon!

I would just like to see a few populated airfields in the QMB. For the fun of flying as much as the fun of blowing things up. A nice airfield makes for nice takeoffs and landings. And with a map as nice as the Kuban map, and the excellent quality of the planes, just flying around for the fun of enjoying the flight itself has really come alive. 2

I agree - I wonder why they can't seem to add static planes and stuff around these airfields in QMB. I remember spending tons of time doing QMBs in the old IL-2 flying an IL-2 against some German airfield that had all sorts of parked planes and a couple of vehicle convoys circling around the outskirts or the field. As repetitive as it was, I never really got tired of blowing stuff up and trying to top my previous record for aircraft, vehicles, fuel tanks and other stuff destroyed before running out of ammo. Would be really nice to see a little more life going on down there in BoS/BoM/BoK. 1

A few F2s is pretty sick too!

The original IL-2 had QMB options like airfield and vehicle attacks that were so much fun to do. Repetitive as they may have been I flew one of those QMB dozens of times on ground attack sorties. It became my go to mission for just goofing around and generally learning to fly aircraft. 3
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 At least in Staligrad and Moscow, aren't there different targets scattered around? I've seen airfields, convoys, artillery batteries and all sorts of things to shoot at on QMB. It definitely doesn't feel deserted to me.

Yeah, you can find various small groups of targets scattered around (if you turn them on and look for them), but it's just weird flying over this big airfield near Myskhako on the Kuban map full of revetments and stuff and all completely empty, while the only target nearby is a group of 5 or 6 trucks heading down the road between the town and the airfield. Just would be nice to catch some planes on the ground and blow them to smithereens once in a while. 1
blitze Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Done that, it`s fun I like doing rolls as I fly over the crests of the mountains and then some inverted flying as well, at tree top level ))
Finkeren Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I still haven't managed to belly land on a mountain top, slide over the edge and go for a sled ride all the way down into the valley. 1
scram77 Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I've not had a chance to explore the map too much, I've been too busy enjoying flying over the coast and attacking ships. Can anyone point me to where the mountains are as I fancy a bit of tabletop action? Thanks

Look for the spots in QMB where you can only fly free flight missions and find the one where you cannot start lover than 2100m. That puts you in view of the nearest snowy peaks. 1

CanadaOne Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Fair enough QMB does need more types of mission options. It became my go to mission for just goofing around and generally learning to fly aircraft. Amen. The QMB in the original IL2 evolved into an outstanding utility. In it's newest incarnation in the IL2 - B.A.T. mod, it's far and away the best QMB of any flightsim period. Some of the QMB maps have front lines and a ton of stuff to do; airfield attacks, naval targets, armour and vehicle convoys, defended bridges, and a ton of AAA. You don't even have to set it up, it's there already. The only thing you need to do is decide on the air options. That kind of QMB action on a map as nice as BOK would be a megaton o' fun. In any case, the quality of the map is outstanding. If the QMB ever lives up to it, it will be awesome.
dburne Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 In any case, the quality of the map is outstanding. If the QMB ever lives up to it, it will be awesome. I have a feeling they are putting the resources they have available into the new Career Mode. I would love to see an improved QMB though but certainly not expecting that any time soon. Between the scripted campaigns available and PWCG currently , along with upcoming career mode I myself have more than enough to keep me occupied. It certainly would be nice though!

One of my bugbears with the QMB is that you can't choose to fly a pure ground attack mission (ie with no enemy aircraft) as part of a friendly flight. Can only do it solo or by including at least one enemy AI. Usually I put in a single Ju52 as far away as possible. But the friendly AI often seem to take it in their heads to focus on enemy planes - ditching ordnance and just taking off in pursuit... But I agree that it would be wonderful to see some populated airfields with aircraft to attack.
katdog5 Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Just more praise....an absolute work of art this Kuban. So polished - The craftsmanship and detail are just astounding...such original terrain, no cut and paste or shortcuts in such a vast area is so awesome. the high standards are much appreciated. . A++ Flying around the water, islands and outer barriers is magnificent ...starting to dream about Midway and crawling into that my sh:(ty Wildcat and getting shot down by some zeros!
CanadaOne Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 One nice thing about the Kuban map is not using it and getting back into the BOS and BOM maps and seeing that they are still pretty sweet, and then a day later going back to BOK and seeing how awesome it is with those lovely Mountains. A question about the BOX maps: are they built with a altitudinal (what a word!) sweet spot in mind? I had some payware scenery for FS9 that mentioned its sweet spot was about 5000', that was the suggested flying altitude for the best eye candy. Obviously in this sim you change altitude by the second, but I was wondering if there was a particular altitude chosen to work from when it was built, where from that best elevation, detail suffered due to either proximity or distance to the terrain?
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 I've never heard the devs mention there being a sweet spot. I find it looks best around 800-1000 meters but to be honest the strength here is that for the most part the sim looks really good at treetop altitude and at high altitude too. The weakest link in all of this right now is the terrain popping on the mountain areas and the fogging that reduces draw distance even on clearer days. The draw circle has been improved somewhat although I know folks still find it bothersome sometimes. Both the popping and distance fogging are said by the devs to be in the roadmap to fix at some point. I mean... these are fairly small things compared to just how amazing it all looks. Plus... you know... its a combat sim!
CanadaOne Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Plus... you know... its a combat sim! Must be why I keep shooting down all those 110s.
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Must be why I keep shooting down all those 110s. Possibly!
Gambit21 Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 I will say this as a campaign builder - the Kuban map is TON's of fun to build and test on...this will really help mitigate the burnout factor, as building and testing can be a grind.
OrLoK Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 (edited) Slightly off topic but anyone notice better perfomance in the Autumn version? On topic: the mountaims are fabulous in the autumn map. Have a look if you havnt already! Edited September 8, 2017 by OrLoK
1./KG4_Blackwolf Posted September 8, 2017 Posted September 8, 2017 I remember flying to and around the mountains in beta and in VR just saying Wow. I love this map, the best one yet IMO. They did a great job with it, yeah you get the pop ups but still it's a very well done map.
Vastarien Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 The map is indeed lovely but... No pine trees on the mountains? I've seen some early screenshots from the devs and there were evergreen forests...

BlitzPig_EL Posted September 10, 2017 Posted September 10, 2017 If snow is what you seek, select the SPRING map and fly north out of the Adler base. The south east corner of the map is where the peaks high enough for snow coverage are.
