taffy2jeffmorgan Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 We must take our hats off to the Devs for the excellent quality of the Kuban map, just flying over the mountain forests and along the valleys is a joy, well done guys 3
Finkeren Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Beautiful yeah. First map I really feel the need to fly around and explore. I'm just looking forward to some optimations to reduce the amount of pop-up in the terrain. At the moment it makes it hard to navigate the mountainous areas, since a ridge or peak can look completely different at distance from what it looks like once you get closer. 2
Ribbon Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Two nights ago i flew for almost two hours on empty map, enjoying view and low flight between mountains. Some really good missions and dogfights could be made in that area. 1
CCG_Pips Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Simply the BEST map ever seen on a simulator game... 1
CanadaOne Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 This new map saved me money. I was going to get the DCS NTTR map, maybe even even load up FSX again and grab some ORBX scenery, because I wanted mountains and better eye candy in general. But the new Kuban map is just so damn good I can forego all that and enjoy this absolutely first class bit of flightsim map making. Now, about that Hurrricane... 1
senseispcc Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 (edited) For those how like "real" numbers for the sizes of the maps; Kuban 1092 squares 01-42 and 01 to 26 Moscow 672 squares 01-24 and 01-28 Stalingrad 828 squares 01-36 and 01-23 Velike Liki 170 squares 01-17 and 01-10 Novosokolniki 25 squares 01-05 and 01-05 Lapino 25 squares 01-05 and 01-05 I suppose all this "squares" are of the same dimensions on the ground so the Kuban map is some 48% greater than the Moscow map and 32% greater than the Stalingrad map. I thank the development team for their great and formidable work. Edited September 3, 2017 by senseispcc 4
LLv24_Zami Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Map is a piece of art. Now we just need a good campaign for it 2
Krab Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 I flew it last night for the first time. Actually it was the first time I'd flown anything at all since May. After sort of remembering how to fly, I took a Bf-110G from Gelendzhik 2, blew up some arty and MRLs and then did about 30 minutes of sightseeing. The map is outstanding. Flying over the Black Sea and Kuban's hills and valleys was a combination of seeing the awesome water effects of CLoD (compared to older sims) and the beauty of flying over New Guinea in Il-2 1946. Of course all at much better visual quality. Because of the distinct visual references I didn't even get lost without GPS, which is a first for me on a BOx map. Great job, Devs!
CanadaOne Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Just took a lovely flight over the Mountains, and it is an excellent map in all regards, but... ...are there no little hillside or mountain top airstrips? I haven't found any yet. Would love to see something along the lines of the Lukla airstrip in FSX, that was cosmic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqgZvb37NX0

They would have been incredibly dangerous in use.
CanadaOne Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I don't think there were historically, and why would there have been? They would have been incredibly dangerous in use. I would assume any airfield during wartime was dangerous to use to some degree. Certainly taking off with 1000 lbs of explosives under your keester being only slightly less dangerous than slipping in the shower. In case, this is a simulation and it would be fun.
Finkeren Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I agree that it would be fun, but we shouldn't add a-historical elements to an otherwise historical map - which I'm sure you agree with
Rolling_Thunder Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 What has impressed me is the time it has taken to produce this map. It has taken these guys less than a year to produce and release this masterpiece. That is while producing and releasing aircraft, FMs, graphical changes and everything else under the hood. The competition need to take stock. 3
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Not mountain bases but I did find that the airfields at Anapa and near Tuapse are pretty cool indeed! 1
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Coming back from the sea on a bad engine and knowing you'll either hit the threshold or smash yourself against a cliff must be good for the heart.
TP_Silk Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I've enjoyed a lot of the vistas on this map, but one of the greatest attention to detail factors was flying along the shore in VR and seeing the waves washing onto and off the beach

The competition need to take stock. Very true. Which makes me optimistic for the opcoming Pacific chapters. With the Pacific maps being mainly water with smaller islands, it should be possible to create several maps for each title.

For my part, though, I'm just here for the fun of it. And them little airstrips is fun. This is a great map for airfield hopping.

This is a great map for airfield hopping. If that's your thing, I'm pretty sure the mission editor has all the parts needed to build your own functioning airfield, so if you can scout a suitable flat strip of open land between the mountains, you might be able to get what you seek.
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 The one that requires a degree in computer programming. It's in the root directory of the game. 2
SYN_Haashashin Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Im doing my best to help out those that do not have the time to learn the ME (I do not have a degree in CE but still Im able to build missions in a weekly basis) to enjoy the new Kuban map but certain comments that pop up everytime the ME is named...just makes me think why I do it. We have talked about the ME a lot in a lot of topics therefore I will ask you, not as a moderator but as a mission builder, please stop with those kind of comments. Haash 2
CanadaOne Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 You do it because you are a nice guy who is interested in the sim and has the patience to help others learn to enjoy it more. And for that, you are owed a sincere thank you. That does not, however, mean the comments about the ME - or lack thereof - are unwarranted. Unwelcome, perhaps, but certainly not unwarranted. And thus the end of my comments on this matter in this thread. It's a damn good map!
SYN_Haashashin Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 That does not, however, mean the comments about the ME - or lack thereof - are unwarranted. To me they are but hey, It will be me I guess..

Haash Haash, I really appreciate what you are doing. All my friends are enjoying the mission you put up for download, and RockRidge is learning from it (he is a programmer as well). But still the mission editor is inaccessible to many of us that used to build missions in the original IL2. It's just simply over many of our heads. You know as well as I that it was never really intended to have a mission editor in this title at all. One of the more mystifying decisions made early on. It's one of the biggest impediments to the wider success of BoX. I apologize for my sarcasm, but this is a situation that has to change. Honestly, I'm not offering criticism to be a jerk, I want this thing to succeed and be around a LONG time, but to achieve that we need more than just a handful of very talented mission makers, which is currently how it will stay if an easier to use editor is not implemented somehow. SYN_Haashashin Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 We are totally offtopic and hope we get back to it after this post...Leave the ME post to a ME topic. But still the mission editor is inaccessible to many of us that used to build missions in the original IL2. It's just simply over many of our heads. Maybe its that...many were used to old IL2, I learned with RoF. I thought it was way way over my head (and more having Vander as "teacher") but I did it. I have a degree in Tourism if thats says something about my computer abilities You know as well as I that it was never really intended to have a mission editor in this title at all. One of the more mystifying decisions made early on. You got that info wrong. ME wasnt intended for Rise of Flight (actually it did ship without one) and thats why its a dev tool, no resources to made one from scracth. Some people had access to the ME really early on with BoS. which is currently how it will stay if an easier to use editor is not implemented somehow. Until people undestand that its not that impossible (Gambit had the same opinion when BoS was released/announced) the situation will stay the same, I agree. It has been said multiple times already, the team only have 1 code guy so expect no changes in that front for now. It is how it is, sorry. Haash 3
Blooddawn1942 Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Beautiful yeah. First map I really feel the need to fly around and explore. This! After the disappointment which the Normandy map delivered, at least to me, this map is nothing but outstanding. I can't get enough from simply flying around!
Max_Damage Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 (edited) This! After the disappointment which the Normandy map delivered, at least to me, this map is nothing but outstanding. I can't get enough from simply flying around! Normandy is pretty awesome dude... The smooth hills make it look real. Admittedly, its best used for helicopters You can fly between hills, forests, rivers and towns. I love it even if it pushes my pc to the limit. Edited September 4, 2017 by Max_Damage
ShamrockOneFive Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 The best thing about the Kuban map aside from the map itself is that really its not a map that they released but its part of an overall package effort that includes the aircraft, vehicles, ships, and career/campaign that will make the map shine. It's outstanding on its own (I thought Moscow was damn good but this is something else) but together its greater than the sum of its parts. Truly.
Rolling_Thunder Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Normandy is pretty awesome dude... The smooth hills make it look real. Admittedly, its best used for helicopters You can fly between hills, forests, rivers and towns. I love it even if it pushes my pc to the limit. Normandy is bland, the performance is horrendous compared to what this game is capable of. It took them years to release it add the aircraft that's part of the ww2 "package" and were talking 5 years at minimum for completion. These guys have released 4 maps, with seasons, and 20+ aircraft in that time. Not to mention the core upgrade to dx11 and everything else they've accomplished. It's quite unbelievable the comparison between the 2 developers. ED should be embarrassed and 1C should be praised for their accomplishments after a rocky start. 4
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Indeed, and ED did it at considerably more cost as well as having a disparate plane set that has nothing to do with the map.
Firestorm07 Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Agreed wholeheartedly, what's been achieved here is nothing short of spectacular. I'm very very impressed with the work that went into this patch on the back of all the work that's gone into this sim since the beginning and am very glad I've purchased the BoX titles

I love it even if it pushes my pc to the limit.I was looking forward to it for years and I spent countless hours in Helos, Warbirds and Jets in it. And while there are a lot of good things, there are far too many bad things to really enjoy it. The bad performance of course. Maybe they can improve this. But the overall look is sterile and artificial. I hate how the airfields look like patches in the landscape and the forest edges are cut with a knife. The water gives no sense of how far above you above its surface. No. I'm really disappointed. I wanted to love it since I'm a huge DCS fan. I own every module. But to be honest, I even like the northern France map from CloD more than the Normandy map. Sad but true. Edited September 5, 2017 by Blooddawn1942
