I beg you - give us a Po-2

I don't want you to misunderstand me.

I'm not saying that having the PO-2 would be utterly without merit or even fun to fly. I just think that once the novelty factor had worn off it'll be challenging to come up with worthwhile, fun, things for it to do.

If BoX were a huge MMROG ( or whatever they call themselves) with real people as ground troops and lots of them, then sneaking around to attack by surprise or even artillery spotting, being able to call fall of shot, and thinking it actually had some purpose then I could see it being worthwhile. Having the A.I as opposition though with their sparsely populated ground units who aren't much worried about losing sleep or being harassed and trying to figure out routines for the AA that isn't either ineffectual or leathal would be challenging.

The one element that I could see as being interesting, to me, would be to see how the PO-2 handles in comparison to RoF.

Would I buy it, quite possibly, but it's doubtful if I would buy it full price, even to support 777, I would wait for a heavily discounted sale and even then it would be more for the curiosity than actually really wanting it.

I would love to believe that I am completely wrong.

Some of you guys really need to lighten up, get a sense of humour. A difference of opinion, one for which I have given reasons, is not criticism, it is an opinion, nothing more.

If an aircraft is needed to validate the FM, is fun to fly and with plenty of exacting data logs etc, might I suggest an Su 26 ( I think ). ;-)

If all goes to plan you'll eventually get one. But won't know for a while if this plan will work as we are trying to use one of our contractors to build it. We'll build the FM. Absolutely no idea when this may be ready for release.

MUCH LOVE FROM IRL FLIERS EVERYWHERE. FINALLY SOEMTHING I CAN IDENTIFY WITH!!!!!!!!

I just think that once the novelty factor had worn off it'll be challenging to come up with worthwhile, fun, things for it to do..

...and yet hundreds of people seem to be happy doing the exact same thing with their 109 and Yak every single night, and most don't bother to take a bomb or two even though the aircraft is capable.

In short - functionally and very arguably you just described a fighter aircraft. It shoots things - the end.

We need expanded gameplay options and aircraft like the Storch are just the ticket.

I'm very happy to read this post from Jason.

What Jason does here is taking devoted members on this community seriously, it also shows a true devotion for this product, yes it is a strange plane to have in a CFS , so is the JU 52 (  being used btw)

Recce planes and observation planes played a major part in WW2 , and was considered as important as bombers, maybe even more. Challenge is how to use it, in old IL 2 they was popular as artillery spotters and there was a mod for it. I am pretty confident that the mission makers will make planes like this important to win a map. Way to go.

Extremely important for Pasific campaigns.

Night Witches

Indeed, this game needs to Orient itself more towards appealing to female Pilots, who can't identify with male Aces. In General there should be more Persons/People of Color (whatever is PC right now), Transgendereds, Other-Kins, Non-Binaries, Transcolored and so on and so on represented in the Game.

How is a Person of Blackness supposed to identify with a German Pilot of WWII, unless you put him/it (add Gender /Gender-Neutral/Non-BinaryPronouns by your liking) into a Luftwaffe Uniform.

What I'm saying is that Il-2 should do the same as Battlefield, where Black of Color German Soldiers are Standard.

That's right Gambit21 - The Night Witches, lets turn off our engines, over the front lines, and then glide around listening for voices drifting up from the enemy encampments ( that don't exist), watching out for careless lights or cigarettes ends and then having dropped a couple of pathetic bombs let's try and evade the one or three light AA guns rather than lots of light infantry weapons (that can't really see us,in the dar, honest).

Gambit, I'm sure you could make some great missions, but don't pretend it's anything close to the experience of the Night Witches. IL2 or computer A.I just ain't that subtle.

I don't know how popular the Po-2 will be, but for mission builders like me it offers a lot of possibilities both as player plane and as AI. For example recon, artillery spotting, supply flights for partisans, transport, trainer, daylight bomber (early in the war), night bomber.

Perhaps also to rescue downed pilots.

With Il-4, we will also have this opportunity, as all long-range aviation of VVS flew almost ultimatively at night.

They didn't always operate as you describe. In fact I just finished reading 20+ personal accounts by Night Wich pilots and I'm having to think if I remember those tactics even being mentioned. (they were in fact - a few times) Their actual operations were normally, or at the very least often less 'subtle' than you describe, and easily simulated with the current mission editor.

And Panzer thanks - but I wasn't claiming that most Po-2's were flown by females. :)

Po-2 sounds like a great trainer / conversion plane from more arcade flight games; the learning curve in BoS is rather step... Besides, not everybody limits his intersts to being competetive in MP sandbox.

Also, PO-2=2 OP  ...

The engines were killed to avoid detection, I doubt you could hear any chatter with the wind.

On the practical aspects, a little creativity solves it :) Take off on the U-2, follow rivers, valleys or the coastline which are visible under most lunar light conditions. The target is a road convoy, an airfield, barracks or tents. Cars have lights on unless you kill the engine too late, airfields and troop concentrations have barrel fires, vehicle lights or other visible light sources. Kill the engine once contact is established or keep it running if you need to or are confident in finding the target in the full darkness. Drop your bombs, machine guns on tripods, light armour, AA cannons and even tanks will fire at you based on audio clues should you give them, or at random if you're sneaky enough. Take stock of the situation, turn around and go home quietly avoiding high altitudes to prevent night fighters from eating you alive. Land in the dark, enjoy.

Thanks, Jason!

Honestly I can't believe people talking about "gaps" in the plane set and "more important aircraft". The Po-2 served in such huge numbers on the Eastern Front, that it has got to be the biggest "gap" in the plane set currently. Po-2s were everywhere, and yet some mention the IAR 80 (of which a grand total of 170 were built) as "more important"? Smh.

In this forum people tend to refuse other people what they want because they want something else. Everybody is so concerned about the priorities 777 have to make, I myself have total confidence in the company ability to judge by themselves

Luftwaffe got Tante Ju, VVS doesn´t have dedicated transport plane at the moment...

Urban legend or bragging, that. According to old pilots of Polish Peoples Army who flew these things, engines could not be restarted in air, so killing them would turn Po-2 into a glider for rest of sortie. Throttled down, yes, but not killed.

So what? Large Transport Planes were far more important to the Germans than to the Russians. The Po-2 is it's equivalent. Both are long Obsolete, but rugged and dependable Civilian Planes, pressed into Military Service they weren't suited for.

Both were STOL Aircraft. able to operate under Conditions no others would fly in. They could quickly be adapted fill a huge number of Roles.

They were used in large numbers out of desperation.

As a speciality Aircraft the Po-2 does stand out. As the J-3 Cub or DC-3/C-47 does for the Americans.

A DC-3 is a must have once we get to the Pacific and the Li-2 is basically a massively improved, superior Version of that (Metric Screws, Bolts, Instruments etc. and less Powerful Engines do prevent Damage to the People's Airplanes by Rowdy Pilots) that could just be created as a By-Product.

A li2 or c47 (so it will be useful on Pacific theater) would be useful as well, Tante Ju is handicapped by the lack of Russian counterpart on server.

And a U2 would be very welcome as well if it has new gameplay features, like Tante Ju, Of course I would buy it right away. Where is the preorder?

Lol I don't get people saying "don't do it, waste of time" then don't buy it.. many peope want it, and not everyone wants to fly and shoot all the time. This could be nice plane for single player and for multi if someone will make good missions then it will be great as well, who said you have to fly in middle of the frontline with it? This could be nice to do recon mission, like Jason said, arty spotter is also nice idea.

There was cry about ju52 as well and if it's available in multi I see people fly it.

You should not think only about yourself, there are people who enjoy non combat roles, and if this goes well, this game may get new players who would specifically fly this kind of planes (if not ju52 or 87 I would never buy bos since I dislike fighters to only fly with them all the time)

Am I right in guessing that most Ju-52 Guys would be more in the Trucks, Tractors and Utility Vehicle Crowd rather than the Muscle and Sportscar one?

Guess where I am. (Yes, I'm ugly, and yes that's mine, I am a Road Warrior, and that is my Po-2 for the Roads of Germany)

We definitely do need a Po-2, I would join yous all in a day-one purchase. Or realistically, a preorder as soon as it goes on sale.

I'm so impressed and enthused that the devs are not only clearly listening to the community, but are starting to think creatively of ways to add content to the same level of quality but while looking for more efficient ways to manage the man-hours it takes to create.

Gentlemen, be realistic - Po-2 and Fi156 are a dead meat when they will meet even any sigle Flak, or enemy fighter or even a bomber.

There are critical gaps in planeset in both sides, wich is need to be filled first of all:

soviet horisontal bomber for BoM/S/K (Il-4),

Soviet modern fighter for BoM (LaGG-3 series 4 or Yak-1 Series 20),

Soviet light assaultier for BoM/S/K (I-153),

German Divebomber for BoM (Ju87B),

German heavy fighter for BoS (Bf110F-2),

german light assaultier for BoM/S/K (Hs123A-1)...

And even it will be a free time/resourses after all of that, co-billigent's/lendlease aircrafts would be nice to add:

-IAR80/81 for Luftwaffe

-Hurricane for VVS

I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. The only a/c from this list that I feel the sim 'needs' is a level bomber for VVS. Il-4 would be ideal, although I'd even be happy with an SB-2 (even if it means that most bombing runs might be one-way suicide missions...). Aside from that, I'd be happy with an Hs123... but a lot of arguments for that overlap with or are at least similar to the arguments for the Po-2, which is capable of more varied roles besides.

But what I think this sum does not need is more variants of existing aircraft, and especially ones that fulfil roles that are already filled with the a/c that we have. Despite the clear differences in some variants, I don't believe that we need two Stukas, or three Bf110s, or three Yaks or a second LaGG.

Why? Partly for variety in terms of aircraft, but mainly for variety in terms of roles: we already have the position of Luftwaffe single-engined dive-bomber filled, or Zerstörer, or VVS already have a number of fighters.

If you want to try those roles you can take your pick as there are already a number of ways to do that. But for people who want to try something different, or to broaden the appeal of the sim or add more depth to it, then roles w don't yet have is the way to go.

No night harassment biplane, or spotter? Add one!

No photorecon variant of an aircraft? Add one!

No cargo aircraft? We already have one and to its fans (like myself) it was well worth it and a brilliant addition.

Look for roles that we don't add and then tailor the choices to that, is what I would do.

I would love to see a Hurricane but as it doesn't add anything new I would vote against it if it would be prioritised over something that added a new dimension, for example.

Just my opinion, but I think that this sim is already the best of this generation of flight sims available and with a bit of extra work and lateral thought it could become something really special. Rather than just going for more and better fighters and other combat a/c, expand sideways and fill out the ranks that are less obvious but no less important, and simulate the whole of the air war rather than just the dogfights and frontline close air support bit of it.

Jason, so glad to hear that's the approach, I'll buy as much as I can to make sure it pays off.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Ok, here is a question.

We have a server with Battle of Moskow map, but had to place a LaGG-3 from late 1942 as a default fighter in late 1941 planeset. Also, we had to place a Ju87D-3 (mid-1942 aircraft) into 1941 conditions.

We have a Battle of Stalingrad map, and we had to place a Bf110E-2 (1940 aircraft, wich is too "old" for late 1942 timeframe) because we have no Bf110F-2.

And I can continue this list of "planeset problems".

One less problem for mission design then

There's plenty of functionality in the editor to create some compelling missions for this type of aircraft - Storch as well.  :salute:

I think it is a whise decision to use "simpler" aircraft for asessing possibilities with 3rd party.

Although these aircraft are "dead meat" in combat agiainst other planes, I see their value in mission making. We have a wonderful new map now. Ever got a rescue mission on a mountain using the Storch? Or intercept a Storch bringing a VIP to a heavily defended area? Or evacuating a VIP from a road in dowtown Stalingrad near the end? I would guess a low flying Storch or Po2 at dusk is a very difficult target to find. I think these planes, being so different, can bring a whole new aspect to the game.

PLUS: Watching all the vids of Monostripezebra where and how he will land these planes. ;)

This is an experiment. If it works we can have them make more types of planes. Not all planes users want are easily made or possible. Po-2 and maybe the Storch or Fw-189 offer ability to loiter and call in Arty Strikes like we have in ROF. Anyways, we'll see what happens.

Jason

I'm glad you can see that side of it Jason. That's a concrete role for those planes which would be well utilised by the non fighter jocks amongst us; quite apart from the sheer joy of flying them. Good times in the Storch of old.

That's a handy place for a big sticker. ':-D

I'm tempted to make a demo mission illustrating a Storch artillery spotting mission or calling for ground attack using a stand-in aircraft.

The trouble is that the only player initiated trigger I have is "OnBingoBombs" at the moment.

Which means that when you spotted the convoy or truck camp or whatever, you'd have to drop bombs in order to make the radio call and call in the air strike (or artillery)

The alternative is just using a check zone, but that takes the player out of actually spotting the vehicles.

There were two seat Il-2s used for artillery corrections.

With some artistic license, bombs or rocket could be used to create smoke columns on the target that in turn are spotted by neighbouring troops with radio equipment who, fully aware of the enemy's position thanks to your actions, call in artillery fire. That's one way to justify it.
