Current state of game? (multiplayer/singleplayer)

Hi all!

So i still don't have any versions of this sim, but the temptation is stronger than ever  . I've been more or less following the development for years, and i have RoF, so i have a pretty good idea about what to expect, but i still have some questions (please try to answer objectively):

1, Multiplayer: Even though i'm a complete newbie to ww2 i would probably at least try flying against human opponents eventually. Questions are:

How does a typical multiplayer server look like these days (realism level, playerbase etc.)?

What are the average number of players in the evening hours (European time)? What is max. count for one server?

How balanced is it normally? Will i often see 3vs10 dogfights? If i'm not mistaken this can happen and it did happen sometimes in RoF.

Is there any dedicated newbie server of practical use? Something like NEW WINGS for RoF?

2, Singleplayer:

What do you expect from the upcoming carrier mode? Do you think it will have at least the same depth as the RoF one had, or will we have to wait more for that?

Thank you in advance!

1. There are a few good multiplayer servers to choose from. All but one or twp are in Europe so you won't have latency problems. There are a few interactive campaigns with progressive missions (coconut's servers, DED Random Expert, Finnish Pilots and TAW), and servers where each mission is disconnected (Wings of Liberty, New Wings, DED Normal). Random Expert, Finnish, TAW and coconut's expert use full realism setting, no map marker, no icons, no artificial assists. Wings of Liberty and I believe New Wings use map markers but no external views or icons, while coconut's normal and DED Normal have icons, external views and map markers. 80 players in one server is the maximum, and some of these servers reach that often.

Some servers, especially Wings of Liberty, have a German numerical advantage most of the time. In others it's more even.

2. The new career should be RoF's but improved even further, I'm very excited for it. You also have a lot of scripted campaigns available until it's out, most of them for Battle of Stalingrad :) Give it a go, I'm sure you'll love it.

:salute:

Thanks for the info!

BTW are the player numbers i'm seeing on steamcharts (~200 peak) only for the steam version or it's the total of all pilots?

You only see information from people who purchased through Steam.   A large proportion of sales are direct through this website so don't show up in any Steam data.

After at least a full year of hardly touching BoS, I am excited to be able to return.  I prefer to fly Soviet.  I am most often on Eastern Time USA.  I find I enjoy these games if there is always the same set of persons online to chat with.  So what if any is the current squad or just some guys that hang out together that would fit my situation?

I have owned this game for over a year and have really not played around with it all that much. For whatever reasons I just don't really care for it all that much. I fly a few other sims (or games closer to sims than this) but I find IL-2 to be pretty uneventful after only a short time of game play.

That's not to say that others do not enjoy it. I have watched videos of people really digging this game. And they do some cool stuff with it. But it just isn't my cup of tea. I think that the limited user setup is kind of an issue for me. Having flown Xplane, DCS, FSX, and others, IL-2 just isn't user friendly enough for me. I prefer to set things up a certain way and maybe I'm just not understanding, but the controls options are pretty limited or just user unfriendly, I'm not sure which. I tend to think it's a bit of both.

Although the exterior of the planes are really nice, I find the cockpits to lack in substance compared to other sims. They're more gamy and really kind of flimsy in my opinion. This kind of turns me off a bit too. I haven't really taken a lot of time to get to know the flight model but from what I have seen of it thus far, it's better than most but not as good as a couple of others I fly. If it's of any help, it's a lot better than Xplane's and FSX.

I do love the graphics. Not that they are better or worse than any others, they're just cool. The explosions are a lot of fun too. But there isn't much more in this game than that for me.

Please keep in mind that this is only my personal opinion. I'm just a casual user and not a 3 hour a day gamer junkie I do not take gaming all that seriously. I do not know this game in and out like some others here do. I do however know what most sims out there feel like. But everything that I am expressing here is opinion only. It's not right or wrong, it is just how one person feels about it. There is no fact or matter of fact about it.

If I had to do it all over again, I would still buy IL-2 because it's nice to play something different from time to time. But I can't take it as seriously as some of my other sims.
