On my server with expert-like settings (CEM, no icons) I have left the external cameras enabled. I think there is a number of legitimate uses of external cameras in the game today, e.g. the ability to look at your own plane on the ground, and disabling cockpit-thumps for people flying in VR. There are also quite a few illegitimate uses, mostly related to doing away to cockpit-inforced restrictions on the perception of the environment.

There are pros, there are cons. What's your position?

This poll has three questions. The first two tell how strongly you feel about it, the last one how you feel about it.

I´m not a great fan of external views due to the risk of people will use them to cheat-and they will,100% sure-but how about use external camera only on the ground? Is this possible?

I'd fly on a good expert server regardless of the external view settings, but I think expert servers work better without them.

That said I don't know the exact problems VR users are facing which could be remedied by external views so it's hard to give a proper informed opinion.

External views enabled removes the head movement restriction in the cockpit.

I have gotten used to the bump restrictions for fighters, still annoyed at the forward movement restriction and some of the "invisible wall" stuff in bombers.

I vote for externals off, unless there is some way in the future to only allow it on the ground, which to my knowledge there is not currently.

I prefer with no external views. This is the main reason I haven't been flying in coconut server lately ... It's a great server but external views is a major turn off for me

Padlock enemy external mapped to a button on the stick. It will happen. A competitive PvP game, expect it to happen. If you allow the game to be gamed, it will be.

External views are nice in SP. In MP i want the more real thing. No navigation icons, no external views etc.

Neat to have for solo or PvE but PvP it is kind of a cheat, too easy and tempting to "sneak a peek" to see what/where an enemy is.

Running VR I'm already at a disadvantage to trackIR users, my resolution is less, removing my ability to get into their blind spots undetected is pretty much a deal breaker on if I ever use that server.

Errr, perhaps there are many of us who use neither VR, nor a large 4K display. With my 22.5 inch HD display I feel I'm in a disadvantage to both. Please don't tell me I should forget about this game and that icons are unrealistic.

There are servers that that cater to those settings.

Having the external views turned off is just a matter of habit and getting used to the restrictions you have in each pit. It is harder to find enemy planes being locked in the pit, but then if we're playing expert we're trying to emulate a real pilot in a game setting with all the limitations that come with it being a game.

It's a learning process like going from automatic engine management to complex. At first it's unpleasant and hard, but over time it becomes normal and learning each pits instruments does take a little time.

Yep, agree with this... on the ground only, it makes finding and orientating yourself to the airfield layout far easier.

Once in the air external view is cancelled.

There were quite a few servers did this in the old IL2

What about we told people not to take advantage of external views.....

In Il-2 1946 there are virtual arrows suspended in the air and hinting at the taxi direction towards the runway. Something like the navigation icons here, but only accessible on the ground. They are optional and only visible in internal view. Could be a solution in BoX as well.

Not in multi, but ok in campaign.

Arrows are cool, but what would fit better would be able to contact ground and check the taxi direction. N, E, S, W, etc. Not that it would help in the current system. I can't understand the automated voice chat anyway.

I know a bit of German and Russian, but the automated voice is more an annoyance than a help for me as well. Perhaps, apart from arrows, a close map view could be of help, I mean a map view where your position relative to the runway is displayed when you're on the ground.

The external view will certainly be used to hack the enemies. It is like everyone is using transponders and radars. ROF had a bug for while that prevented servers to disable external view. It was a couple of days of madness in the full real servers, like everyone was flying and being watched at the same time. People would learn in advance the settings of the planes -- which mods / weapon setups we were using, how many of us were in a certain area, the formations we were in and so on. Every server became airquake / label servers overnight, and not only that, but with people choosing the easiest targets, trolls harassing a specific player (people on chat reporting being jumped by the same player several times) and such. It was 'a mess'.

External view only on the ground would be very nice, the IL-2 1946 servers had an option for this.

It's nice that you can stick your head out with the canopy open on some planes, but not all planes allow this. You would expect it to be easier to taxi to runway given you have all the ground crew around.
