hotshotmike1001 Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 would be cool to see the russian Modded P40s in il-2 Klimov M-105P/R they put Lagg 3 engines on P40s do to the shortage of New P40 engines
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 It was a bit of a gimmick, and an unsuccessful one at that with limited numbers and poor performance. A similar thing happened to a handful of MiG-3s that were fitted with AM-38s in 1942. Not sure it's worth the effort, since the few aircraft to receive this treatment were near Leningrad.
BlitzPig_EL Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 But at least you could use full throttle all the time...
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 Nice one The sad wee Klimov running on full throttle could only match the V-1710-F3R in nominal mode, and I'd guess the common oil and coolant overheating on the 105P made matters even worse. It's no wonder the Frankenkitty didn't last long on the front.
-=PHX=-SuperEtendard Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 Maybe with the PF it wouldn't be that bad, around 1200HP at low altitdes which is more or less what the military power gives (around 42"/45" at 3000 RPM) that's currently limited to a couple of minutes. Maybe the P-40E's large radiators could handle the Klimov?
US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 Maybe we should model the Allison correctly. There's a start.
Danziger Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 It was a bit of a gimmick, and an unsuccessful one at that with limited numbers and poor performance. Actually the MiGs with AM-38s were a lot more successful. They just couldn't produce it because Stalin ordered (actually made death threats) MiG-3 production stopped because the Il-2 used the engine and was a greater priority.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted August 27, 2017 Posted August 27, 2017 From what I know the performance was excellent but the MiG-3's cooling system simply couldn't handle the AM-38 and proposed workarounds to remedy that didn't achieve substantial results.
