Just to add a little perspective on the so-called cultural differences of crime and reacting to it, in Brazil criminals usually go around in large groups carrying both knives and guns, very often assault rifles. Things have been pretty sketchy down here for a few years, and it's bordering on the impossible to defend yourself lately.

Glad you're well Daedallus, you did a cracking job.

I'm a gun guy. Actually I've been a gun guy since I was like 6. My wife is from Poland and we lived in England and Poland for a while. I can honestly say I never felt the need to pack heat over there like I do here. My wife was always anti-gun and since we moved back to America she says she understands why people carry guns here. She doesn't feel that same level of safe here.

I guess a lot of it is down to specific locations too. From where I´ve lived in the UK, East London for example is not the place to find yourself alone at night (and sometimes during the day too), same for Leith in Edinburgh and most of Glasgow and its outskirts. The centre of Edinburgh however is stupidly safe (or at least it was), as is the beginning of Glasgow´s West End.

For those unfamiliar, the main thread there is the so-called ´chav´ - an uneducated teenager usually donning a clearly branded tracksuit, usually white trainers, often found in groups and carrying knives or other sharp objects. Regardless of where you are they´ll speak an almost unintelligible dialect vaguely resembling the local variation of English, and have a fetish for threatening to ´cut you´, stealing phones and occasionally shoes should they be of the sports type.

If the perpetrator has learned anything at all from flight sims, he'll be on whichwalkingstick.com in no time.  Complaining loudly that the sticks are much too tough.

All I can say is that flight sims have helped me with driving reaction, but man your story takes the whole cake! Glad you're ok and that you took the initiative.

Hi all

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the supportive messages, you lifted my spirit, thanks especially for the friendly legal advice, and those that shared their personal experiences.

Just to clarify something in this particular case, the police told me the burglar was a one man crime wave who has got away with it for years by wearing gloves and not being seen, they think he will get 3 years because I am willing to ID him, his blood was on my wallpaper and there is cctv footage of him using my stolen credit card. So you can imagine how happy that makes the police, who told me I had acted reasonably because I said I was in fear of my life. I have to say the uniformed officers and forensic officer were really good.

But I would like to stress that every situation is unique, especially in other countries and cultures, just be careful and do what is appropriate for you and that situation, so I can look forward to seeing you in the skies and hopefully shoot you!

Daedallus

Are you in the UK? I would say that you can always trust our Bobbies, they are pretty good about the law and the ins and outs of it.
