I just joined this site and would love to get back into IL-2, played to non-stop from 2004 to 2011, spent most of that time in the 334th Eagle Squadron.  I have a few questions.

1.  In the "old days" we found servers using Hypper Lobby, how is that done today, and how busy are those servers?

2.  Is the old IL-2 still around and played?

3.  If 2 is no, what is played?

4.  Last are anyone of the old guys from 334th still flying and around if so let me know.  Would love to catch up.

Thanks,

Zemke

Join the server by selecting "multiplayer" in game and selecting from the list of dedicated servers.

Sadly, the glory days of Hyper Lobby are long gone. There are currently not as many people that play this sim online as in the old IL/2...the failure of CLoD gutted a huge part of the community. As the community drifted away, many squads broke up and ceased to exist...you don't see as much "squad" representation (at least in the West) anymore...no AFJ, 334th, JG27 might be a different group now, no CIA, no SOB...not even sure if any of the JG77 guys I used to fly around with play anymore.

The old IL/2 is still around, albeit in heavily modded form...absolutely massive selection of planes and maps, but it's from the Dual Core generation and it's long on the tooth and there is no getting past that (IMO)

I did see a guy from 334th on a server called DED_Normal where I usually fly. 334th_Moose I think it was?

Ask 334th_Virtue, he's the CO nowadays.

You probably mean Mosse. DED Normal is his goto server :)

Some of the guys already answered but I'll add a few different things here.

1) In-game server browser is workable. We're also trying to get more people to use the new Discord community to help arrange people and get them into the game. Free download Discord and get the link: https://discord.gg/Afrxzn

2) Yep... the original is still kicking I think its 4.14.3 officially now under the management of Team Daidalos and plenty of mod packs too. Lots of things were added although it feels a little dated these days.

3) The new IL-2 series is the one at this forum. It releases in a different way than the original and I wrote a guide about how to get started here: https://stormbirds.wordpress.com/2017/03/12/which-il-2-should-i-buy/

4) No idea. I've seen more squads getting back into things very recently... I hope its a trend. There was definitely a gutting of the community with the disaster that Cliffs of Dover started out in. Not everyone has come back although we do see oldies returning and fresh blood being added to the mix too.

I still have the 334th TS, and I have checked it several times over the years and never see anyone there.

Frankly, I would love to get back into IL-2 or whatever the next best thing is these days, but I want to fly with and against real people, not bots.

I am embarrassed to say this here, but of late I have been playing War Thunder.  It is not the same, but it is easy to join, easy to get in a game, which is what made IL-2 so great when HyperLobby was going. Fly die, respawn and do it again.

I don't know why, but I feel like I need to tell the story of my love affair with IL-2 and how it all started.  I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2003-2004 while in the National Guard.  One of my friends was a Commercial Pilot for a small regional carrier and we talked about flying and Combat Flight Sims, and he asked if I had brought a laptop with me, which I replied, "yes".  He said he had this really cool WW II flight sim called IL-2 Sturmovik, "had I heard of it", he asked.

"No", I replied.

He said it was "the best of its kind he had seen", and we could play against each other with a cross over cable.  But we had no joy sticks, so we asked our Afghan translators to find us two joy sticks, which they did.

We played and I loved the game.  I loved flying against him, and the challenge that was on so many levels.  He, of course, kicked the crap out of me at first, but slowly over time (a year) I got better and better and finally was able to beat him on a fairly regular basis.

When I came home, I got a copy of IL-2, and went to the games link for "online" play and found no one or one person, so I thought the game was dead, and that there was no community left any more and that everyone has already moved on or whatever, (you guys know how it is with games).  Anyway, I was just happy to fly against whoever showed up on the site, and usually, it was one guy who always flew a Hurricane and always kicked my butt.

One day I asked him in chat, "was this site ever really popular", ie, "when did the community die out?"

He said, " it is not dead, everyone is on Hyper Lobby."  I asked, "what was Hyper Lobby?"

SO.........I downloaded this Hyper Lobby and was SHOCKED at the number of servers and the MASSIVE number of people on those servers.

That was around the fall of 2004, and a seven-year love affair began with IL-2.

I loved IL-2 and I loved the 334th.

I've never been a squad guy, although I was associated briefly with TFS (that doesn't mean "team fusion) back in the day.

Some of you may remember Goodwood.

Anyhoo...seriously thinking of a starting up a "Sentai" when PTO gets here...even though I'll be spending plenty of time in the Wildcat as well.

That one gets a little weird...another reason I normally don't do squads.

"VF_21Sentai"...pffff...

Get the game, you'll love it.

there  are enough people to play with depending on your timezone and the sims just keep un expanding (we will get battle of Kuban next with a new map a bunch of new planes)

I'm always happy to see new people join the community

The official Team Daidalos forum is here http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/forumdisplay.php?s=1d6c452d06c2a854ed94fd414f6d6e2d&f=202, where they announce and link all patches. Current patch level is 4.13.4. If you have the Steam version, it updates automatically, I guess.

If you stopped playing IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 in 2011 you may have missed the made-flyable excellent Henschel Hs 129 with all possible Rüstsätze (even those that will not be included In Battle of Kuban). Of course I'm talking about those experimental 3,7cm and 7,5cm cannons underneath the fuselage.

If IL-2 is still played, where or how are they playing?  In other words, still Hyper Lobby or some other place.  I installed HyperLobby and there was NO ONE on any server, made me sad.  :(

This forum id for a different entry to the IL2 series. its called Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Moscow and Battle of Kuban. those three are integrated into the same launcher, it is a different game that il2 1946 so you need to buy any of the aforementioned games in order to play. there is no hyperlobby here, people play from the Multiplayer section of the main menu of THIS game. :D

You can buy it on Steam or through this website directly

Are you sure you picked the correct IL-2 on the list. There used to be two: "IL-2: Sturmovik" and "IL-2: Forgotten Battles." You want the latter for the original game.

In the new game the multiplayer server browser is built right in. It has no chat function. For that... TeamSpeak or Discord as I mentioned before.

What ShamrockOneFive said. Also, to catch up in the recent happenings in the new Il-2 (and other flight sims too) I'd highly recommend that you read through his Stormbirds blog. It puts most aviation and gaming magazines to shame, and it covers a lot of important details that get lost otherwise :)

Is IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 and for what matter IL-2:46 and Hyperlobby is now almost  "death"  ~11 players online now (including me) - the "IN GAME" count the empty servers as players:

Both is now "history". :)

I still play IL2 1946 sometimes (online with Hyperlobby and offline). Still a great game with dynamic campaign and nice multiplayer. Daidalos Team did a great job and can't wait to see what's coming!

They are currently working on the Lancaster and Channel map. I also saw a "test" somewhere on the forum for a forest replacement with real trees instead of 2D flat one we have.

Just loaded up the newest IL2-46 B.A.T. expansion pack, "Checkpoint Charlie". It changes thirteen separate "unzip to file" mod pack installations into just two exe. installs. Couldn't be easier. The new IL2-46 BAT sim is about 70GB fully installed, and you get everything form a Sopwith Camel to a P-51 to an F-18, with maps (100+) and ground object (4000+) to match every era. It's yuuuuuuge!

The new mod pack even has an F-104 and plenty of big azz concrete runways with night lighting for some excellent landing fun, complete with a braking parachute on the F-104. Sweet!

Right. They did change it to say IL-2: 1946... I had forgotten. Yeah I just checked now and its pretty quiet. Busier during the weekends as per usual. IL-2: BoX is now busier than IL-2: 1946.
