Hi guys, I'm in the planning stages of my last few missions and have hit a bump in the road.

The date is December 13th, 1942 Don/Chir front, BoS - Operation Winter Storm has taken off and scored some ground...

I want the player to support the the armor clash near "Verkhne-Kumskiy." However, pin-pointing this town is a problem for me. Google map shows it directly north of Chikov, on the north side of the Askay river. But on the IL-2 BoS map a small town called "Poselok Im. 8 marta" is the only possible candidate I can see based on that cross reference.

EDIT: Also Verkhne-Kumskiy is marked on this nice map I found: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/ams/eastern_europe/txu-oclc-6519747-nm38-10.jpg but as you can see "Poselok Im. 8 marta" is ALSO just west of Verkhne-Kumskiy!!! So this town is missing in the BoS map??? It should be in grid 1718 I believe (BoS grid ref).

Unfortunately this is quite an "empty" area of the map. I might need to readjust the date and mission outline plan. hmm

Interesting find, Netscape! I've checked an operational map and from what I see it should be close to 1718, like you said. You can see the road heading south from Gromoslavka, Pos. Im. 8th M. is there like you mentioned, but the crossroads on the map and Verkhnekumskoe isn't there.

However, Google Maps points to what the game calls 8th March, and zooming in you can see a small neighbouring village just to the east. When you look at the Stalingrad map in il2missionplanner, in the same position you have a road with two small clusters of trees. Considering the very small size of Verkhne-Kuminskiy, is it possible that these trees mark the position of the settlement? Also, could you go in game and see if any villages are actually there (ie in game but not specifically marked in the map)?

Well according to that map I posted Verkhne-Kumskiy appears to be much larger than Poselok Im. 8 marta.

I view the game map in the editor btw, which I always assumed was a 100% accurate reflection of in-game terrain.

And I had the same thoughts about those little spots of trees, like this is where it should be!

Verkhne-Kumskiy and lots of other villages are not on the games map, I've also tried to find it for one of my missions. I would suggest to use the village block objects and build it manually.

Ah good point. Objects look odd without proper ground texture underneath them. But it is winter terrain so I think it might look ok as opposed to summer/autumn.

EDIT: on second thought, the terrain along that road isn't flat so placing even the smallest village blocks looks goofy. And having to put a custom icon letting the player know the village location will seem out of place relative to the other missions...
