DD_bongodriver Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Bongo, aren't you getting a bit pernickety now? Gliders have extremely efficient wings, but don't generate thrust, and the ground effect behaviour is slightly different, so I don't think their behaviour pertains to the observation of low wing, fixed wing, propeller driven, aircraft. Not pernickety no, just confused how you are so dismissive, ground effect initial behaviour is universal no matter what type of aircraft is experiencing it, what you describe is deliberately using some ground effect to prolong flight down the runway.
Sternjaeger Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 That´s what i called "excessive speed". I don´t think, we have a different view in this point. When you come down on a normal glide, and keep the power untouched, the speed will surely decrease, when you level off . To stay in the ground effect, you have to add power. Same as without ground effect. we're kinda saying the same thing, but I'm not sure whether we're looking at how ground effect works in the same way. Not pernickety no, just confused how you are so dismissive, ground effect initial behaviour is universal no matter what type of aircraft is experiencing it, what you describe is deliberately using some ground effect to prolong flight down the runway. that's what we're talking about here, not gliders. The fine line between wing efficiency and ground effect on gliders is quite a blurry one too, and doesn't help in what we're trying to ascertain here, that's my 2p..
DD_bongodriver Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I'm not sure that is what we are talking about, and now I'm not sure what we are really trying to ascertain either....or why. Ground effect to me is randomly encountered, even if conditions are exactly the same, unless we are flying WIG aircraft then I really don't see why we need to be discussing using ground effect for prolonged floating.
Sternjaeger Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 well prolonged floating is the primarily "undesired effect" of ground effect.
DD_bongodriver Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 ...or the "undisired effect" of overspeed I have to agree.... well prolonged floating is the primarily "undesired effect" of ground effect. Yes, so why are we discussing deliberately prolonging the float?
Sternjaeger Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 because you can control the extent of ground effect if you want to.
DD_bongodriver Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 because you can control the extent of ground effect if you want to. But in this case are we not discussing the undesired effects? I'm not just being contrary mate, I really don't know where you are driving at.
