animaal Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Hi,I'm new to IL2, slowly gaining skills.Single-player missions are good, but I'm looking forward to some multi-player activity. I think there would be a lot to learn from going on missions, maybe follow a squadron of people who know more.But...Am I likely to annoy people?E.g. if I'm shot down a lot, or crash from stalling, does it negatively affect the other guys on my side? If I crash-land do I block the runway? When I crash, is it a waste of a precious plane that will then be unavailable? Does it reduce the team's score? I don't mind looking useless, but I don't want to be a nuisance...Thanks.
von-Luck Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 (edited) None of that matters on wings. Just don't jam up the taxi way or the strip. Lots of experienced pilots to help with little things. von Luck Edited August 10, 2017 by von-Luck
Thad Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Salutations, One learns by doing. Feel free to go online. Do your best and be willing to learn. Don't worry about annoying others. Don't take any of this that seriously... after all, this is a simulation... not real life. Join in and have fun with the challenge presented. Oh, don't allow yourself to be offended if anyone does appear to get annoyed with you. They don't know you and probably lack patience with others and most likely have other problems of their own. 2
[CPT]Pike*HarryM Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 ^ good advice. I would only add learn how to start up and taxi your preferred aircraft. You can do this in quickmission, set the start state to "Parked".
animaal Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 Thanks everybody. I tried a server this evening. No problem taking off, but the lack of the "quick map" was a bit of a shock to the system. Thankfully the "Mission Overview" screen shows where I am. No problem taking off, although I'll have to learn about keeping the engine cool above 33% RPM. Spent twenty minutes getting to a set of bridges in enemy territory, only to be shot down by AAA. At least I didn't have to worry about landing. It's a lot more fun than I remember when Digital Integration's "Fighter Pilot" in the Eighties
BraveSirRobin Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Am I likely to annoy people? Noobs make good bait, so you won't annoy anyone as long as you don't shoot at friendly aircraft.
ShamrockOneFive Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Glad you got on to multiplayer and flew around a bunch! New players are typically helped out in my experience so long as they don't do anything truly silly. Don't shoot friendly aircraft, don't mess up the taxiway and everything else should be fine!
DickDong Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) Quickest way to learn will be to wing up with a vet who can show the ropes while being patient. Comms make the process go quicker too. Hope you enjoyed your first sortie of countless ones in the future. If anyone gets pissed at you after telling them its your first time, I "know" a few people to "take care" of it. Key thing is most players will help you, but there are always a few rotten apples. Edited August 11, 2017 by Banzaii
216th_Jordan Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 keeping the engine cool above 33% RPM. Did you not open up your radiators? MP in general isnt a turnament. Go there, have fun, try to not shoot down friendlies and you are mostly good to go.
SAG Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Hop on Teamspeak. find people willing to show you the ropes and thatll help you get going real fast. if you ever see me around. just ask me for help and ill happily do so
animaal Posted August 11, 2017 Author Posted August 11, 2017 Did you not open up your radiators? No, it was only late last night that I read more about them, and realised the starting setting (i.e. closed) isn't a recipe for success. Tried a single-player flight, opened the oil&water rads, and everything was much better - I could even climb. Got them mapped to buttons now, In hindsight maybe I should be proud of making it so far behind enemy lines while hobbled
Herne Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 Multiplayer can be a steep learning curve on the expert servers. Took me some time to even learn to taxi, and even now, if I'm not paying attention i can still ground loop. Really rewarding though, takes time to recognise friend from foe at a distance. Some servers you don't even get the GPS for the map so you really have to map read / navigate and pay attention to your heading. I find these the most rewarding. Hope you have fun, see you in the skies
