Virus* Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 HI, i have the rift from some weeks, and at night i am experiencing a annoying issue i have a huge color banding both in il2 bos and Dcs World. during day i am not noticing it (maybe because there are more colors). I tried also to lower the gamma settings but that don't change the problem. I have done searches and it seems that many players have this issue and for example in Elite Dangerous (that i don't have) has been fixed by the developers that added a dither setting in the graphics options (link here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/316478-FEEDBACK-2-2-03-Update-4-New-VR-feature-Enabled-dithering-for-VR-to-reduce-banding/?page=1) I have also read about a monitor game...that is linking a monitor to the hdmi output where the rift is...tried also that but all i have after that is a black rift screen and i need to reboot in order to see it again. So my question is...could someone please tell me that if it is my rift broken, my pc not good (a vr ready notebook from msi), or it is normal and maybe the developers can help us adding the dithering options also in Il2?fortunately not many missions in il2 are at night, but i'd prefer the problem solved. I would upload also pictures of both il2 and dcs but i don't know how to do. Thanks in advance to everyone for the attention and the help
Torso Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Your Rift is not broken. The issue is with the lack of dithering by DCS and IL-2 in their graphics engines. I have a thread on the ED forums for the issue in DCS. Had not started one here. The way the LCD panels in the HMD's handle night just magnifies the issue 10x vs how it renders on a monitor. I wish they would incorporate dithering. I just avoid night time because it looks so bad. Maybe one day it will be an option available in game for VR users.

To be precise the Rift (and Vive) do not use LCD screens. They are OLED. You are correct about the dithering though. After much complaining and with the acknowledgement and help from a Frontier dev, Frontier applied dithering to get rid of (almost completely) the banding in Elite Dangerous .Hope the devs here read this. Virus* Posted July 29, 2017 Author Posted July 29, 2017 Stop flying after dark dangit!! Yes in il2 there are few missions at night..and infact i tried to fly at night using quick missions and putting time at 2am all because i found this problem in dcs and wanted to see if it was also present in il2...unfortunately it was. I really hope devs read this and fix with dithering or something other..i am not a developer but i thing it is not so hard to do
