Which version to buy for beginner with CV1 Oculus Rift.

Recommended Posts

Hi Pilots of the brave,

I want to join and crash after seeing some great video's of this flight sim.

I have a Oculus Rift cv1 and want to buy this game but not sure which version to buy.

Should I order BOS or BOM or  both or ?? and why?

Hello,

VR support is really good.

I say Bos and bom because BOS offers good line of fighter planes and BOM has JU88...

If you like bombing, JU88 is highly recommended.

I think BOM is on 40pct on sale now.

I believe BoM is currently 40% off on the IL-2 store, which is a bargain for that price :)

If I had to choose 1, it would be BoS. It has the iconic aircraft from both sides, with a great mix of capabilities. You will be certain to find something you like on both sides with BoS. Also, I get better performance on Stalingrad maps.

Of course BoM is 40% off though, so...

I would suggest BoS , then if you find you like it go ahead and grab BoM while it is on sale.

Hello! :)

Well if money is an issue I'd say go with BoM as it is on sale now and it has an interesting planeset. If you want to be more competitive with a bit newer planes go for BoS. If you buy through steam you will need to buy BoS first.

Have you got any simulator experience already?

Money is not a reall isue but i do not like subscripiton based models and p2w models since i am to old to learn to be proficient probably at anything with wings.

And despite this i do almost buy only on steam sales since a bougth few times full price for sw just to find out it is on sale three four times a year.

I look for beginner friendly, competitive , solo or great small co-op team plays. With players who can teach me hopefully how to fly and land and don't flame when you make mistakes.

btw- Should i buy through steam or here? (any difference)

It does not really matter if you buy through steam or here as you need to create and account on il2strumovik.com anyways. However, if you buy on the website more money will reach the developers, which is a good thing.  Btw: This isnt p2w, if you thought that. What theater you go with is mainly a preference thing. And for teaching it might be good to join some friendly squad as online alone can be a bit harsh at times. :)

Danniego,

While very few will flame you for being a beginner and flying online (average age and so maturity amongst il2 players is a bit higher than your average pc game) this is still a proper simulator. And if you are new to those, it will take some time and practice before you can successfully fly missions online. Pilots online will generally be very helpful though.

Welcome to the community!

IL-2 is not subscription based nor is it pay to win so you're in the right place.

I wrote a whole piece on which IL-2 to buy if you're getting started (https://stormbirds.wordpress.com/2017/03/12/which-il-2-should-i-buy/) but the short version is to go and get IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad. Its not on sale right now but it will probably be again in the fall if you can wait that long. The reason for Battle of Stalingrad (1942 time period) is the aircraft set are sandwiched between Moscow (1941) and Kuban (1943) so you should always have something to fly in most multiplayer servers.

That said... Battle of Moscow is on sale and I've absolutely loved flying all of those planes too. It's a tough call. :D

Thank you all for the input.

I just order BOS using my steam environment as this is where i buy most of my games.

Hopefully if i manage to get airborne within 2 weeks i can buy the BOM with the 40% sale promo. :)

I hope the Vr and controller settings are easy peasy to make it into the air today.

Congrats and welcome to the club! You are in for a treat with this sim in VR!!

You might have a read here first, some info in this thread may be helpful for you in getting BoS set up in VR.

Hello there

Welcome!

VR is epic in BoX

But do note that the *premium*/collector planes are not instawin aircraft by any means although they may initially appear so.

BoM or BoS is a great choice regardless although I think Kuban will be something special. The minute my financial situation allows it i'll definitely be getting it in "early Access" even though i'm not a sim buff in comparison to most here.

You've joined in at a great time, especially with the upcoming FM overhaul.

See you in the skies.

Most people here would probably say that - if it's your first steps into flightsims... you should get a cheap and cheerful joystick. I suspect most people would say that if it's a choice between getting both Stalingrad and Moscow and getting just one of those titles together with a joystick, they'd say go for the joystick.

Also, don't be discouraged. With the original IL2, it took me an hour or two to take off successfully, then another couple of hours to learn how to turn a little without crashing. Baby steps!

(But I'm already insanely jealous of you for having an Ocululs Rift. Grrr....)

Good point.

I think it is sometimes easy for some of us, after having done these flight sims for all these year, to just assume the newcomer has already gotten a joystick setup to do this with.

Obviously that is a crucial part of being able to fly these things properly and likely at times an incorrect assumption to make.

Yes, I read a lot of having good hardware gear is paramount for having a great flight sim experience so i bought in anticipation that one day i will try it out.

I bought myself a saitek rudder thing and a tm warthog hotas. Boy that thing is serious heavy and serious awesome just to look and have :)

So when i fall out of the sky i can say it is not my gear that is at fault but it is me!

You certainly have all you need, now get in there and have some fun!

And with the Rift, you will definitely be "In There".

Single player is ok I think for getting a feel for the aircraft, but most missions will start you on the runway.

If you are interested in MP then I would recommend that you do this sooner rather than later. It is a steep learning curve, even taxiing to the runway, takes a little practice, and even now I can spin out and ground loop if I loose my focus, but it is so rewarding, particularly in the rift, where you can lean out of the cockpit with the canopy open with one to one head tracking to see where you are going.

Seriously immersive experience, I love it, and can't get enough <3

German fighters particularly 109's and 190's except the 109 e7, have automatic engine management. When I started I bound the least amount of things that I needed to get the job done, and then added things over time. It gave me chance to get used to where I had bound things, so I could get used to memorizing their positions before I slowly added more, as they were required by each air frame.

I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do, and bring some friends :)

I have decided to get into IL-2. Am I better off jumping straight into Battle of Kuban or starting with BoS? It is not entirely clear to a noob which one to go for. Will be using it in VR - Rift? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Personally I’d go with BoS because it is the cheaper option but it depends on what you want to do, and what aircraft you would like to fly.

Inexplicably I never really investigated IL-2. Been simming for years but after catching a youtube video, I thought I'm missing out here. I should have been clearer with my question. BoS was first, I assume BoM has some game improvements and that follows that BoK is even better yet. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Crap I was reading from first post on down, then realized that was last summer  and thread had gotten revived lol.

If only one to start out, I would suggest with the original one it began with - Battle of Stalingrad.

But try not to wait too long on picking up Kuban, it is gorgeous map and looks really great in VR.

Improvements are generally given throughout all versions, unless map specific. This last large update also had map improvements across the board as well.

All improvements to the game functionality get applied to all three battles, which you buy is just deciding what map and airplanes you want access to.

Sorry for that. I thought to revive a thread rather than starting a new one was good manners, lesson learned. OK Kuban it is then. Thanks for your help.

You are very welcome.

I will caution you, as I do not know what kind of rig you have - Kuban while gorgeous is also the most demanding performance wise.

On my rig I get acceptable performance and it is smooth in VR for me, my frame rates usually are low of 45 and high of 90, during combat they stay fairly low - 50-60 , I fly with ASW off and it is smooth. I fly mostly in the Career Mode.

I'm going to advise you to buy BOM, the i16 in VR is really something special. You get twice the sensations of the other fighters. The other planes are good too, bf110, ju88, 109e7, mig, il2m41, pe2... My least favourite is the 109f2. And by "good" I mean they each have a pretty unique personality and distinct role, but it's true that online they won't be the best performers.

I'd recommend you the battle of kuban (collector) since it has the most diversity in it's planeset.

OK I've bought all three. Seemed the simplest option.

if i could only buy one for VR id buy kuban since it's got the most mirrors for planes!

If you can buy only one and you play in VR get Battle of Moscow. The open cockpit in the I16 is awesome in VR :)

Good lad. To be honest, all packs have good planes, but if someone forced me to choose one, I'd go with Stalingrad. I love the map and I love those planes. For your first career I'd recommend Moscow though, German side. The 109 has no competition at this time so it's a good learner's plane. Although, to be  honest, I'm starting to really like the Mig-3. The cockpit is fantastic for VR, it packs a big punch, lots of ammo, turns really well with flaps, brakes on a dime in an emergency (full flaps), flies superbly at low speed and if sh*t hits the fan, runs away like Brave Sir Robin.

First up thank you all for your help and advice. Second, how did I miss this for so long. Only running on 2D right now as my rift is away for repair, but wow, it is awesome. OK weekend planned for me.
