Praetor,

You will probably find that a lot of guys belong to various groups etc that have their own TS or Discord channels.  Therefore, it might be worth trying to join a group to play with or ask to join their TS/discord channel when in game. In saying that I have noticed that a lot of the common sense teams (English speaking Teams) that aren't over themselves such as the 19 or BSS, appear to use BOS TS on a regular bases, so perhaps you should try to engage with these guys via BOS TS or in game chat to coordinate with.  However, do not give up trying to communicate!!!!!.

As Haza has said, the BoS TS channel is my port of call.  I'm usually on most Thurs and Sunday night Aussie time around 2030ish.

TS servers/channels are like game servers, if they are empty they stay empty, if they have people in them they stay populated. When folks see people in them they join, if they're empty they just leave. If everyone of those leaving would just stay in the server and wait for others to join channels would almost all the time have people in them. BOS Official is probably your best bet, or WOL TS, if you're russian speaking.

Lots use Teamspeak. but its soooo 2005 tech :D

But Discord is 10x more useful and much more stable..
Also Persistant Server chat with UNLIMITED free file and video sharing.

There is over 70 people on IL2 Aus discord and many on other servers..
You can easily switch between servers.

And you have to use it in a damned browser, which is no way good for a gaming voice-com. Or you can use their sandalone client, which doesn't even let you choose the install path... no thanks...

I rather use proper voice-com program, and share the sh*t on some other place, what was made for it.

(Srry, but I slowly start to really hate discord, altough the basic concept is not bad :) )

No you do not have to use it in a browser and i never do..

The above is a stand alone program and you can choose where you want to install it..
You probably downloaded a non genuine version filled with adaware or something.

Its much better than team speak. where you can't even see people offline and what games they playing or what they doing.
Also More secure as no IP info is even shown (people can't just change Teamspeak Unique ID, discord you need a new IP Address also)

The voice packets are smaller and much more stable.
audio quality is much higher.
and the built in chat/pm's/ file and video/pic sharing are very useful

The basic concept is Discord is no different to Teamspeak/Vent or any of them its the same thing.
just newer and with a nice looking UI (versus a windows 2000 appearance)

Is there an overlay that can used used with BOS?

=TBAS=Sshadow14

Yes & no need for 3rd party addons/spyware like teamspeak and Overwolf and it works fine.

you can set it to only show when someone talks or only show pic or only show name.
or like mine it always shows the players then when they talk i see the names light up.

setting it up for BoX is easy just while game running add it to overlay part of discord then sometimes restart the game is needed and it works.

This is obviously a ZOOMED in view of my overlay in top corner.

Oh and i should mention its 100% Free To Join or Host a Server for unlimited time.

When I last checked it did not. This is unfortunately the last feature The Nineteenth is waiting for, or we would probably give Discord a shot.

Do you use Reshade with this by chance? I cant seem to get the overlay to work but I run Reshade 3.0. I wondering if it might be the reason I cant get the overlay to work. Anyone else had this issue?

Make sure Anti virus not blocking overlay.

Hey guys is the Whisper Feature not like
Discords @ Mention feature (which is like private message system)

Sorry i never used whisper on TS so im not sure what it is exactly

216th_Lucas_From_Hell

Not quite. Whisper is when you press a button to message a channel/person 9utside the channel you're in. Useful in big operations where one group is on channel A and another on channel B, but not necessary if you stick together most of the time.

=TBAS=Sshadow14

oohhh ok so Bombers in channel b and fighters in a and they can whisper to one and not all hear the "bomber spam"

216th_Lucas_From_Hell

Precisely, yeah. In FNBF when I flew escort I always had a whisper set to the fighters doing sweep so we could update each other on enemy activity and call for support both ways, but the escort and bombers stayed in the same channel since we were in the same group.

I like Discord a lot more than TS. Easier to use and the text channels with image share make a nice place for the community to talk.

Discord is the way of the future, it still needs some stuff but it will get better with time.  If you need help with Discord please PM me. I think a huge hurdle going forward isn't going to be Discord usage, but the ability to mesh all 125 Dsicord IL-2 separate discord servers  into a single coherent location squads and lonewolfs can come to meet up and communicate.  The key is to bring everyone in together.  Last thing, I was one of the 'old dogs' who wont learn new tricks using TS only.  Now, hardly use TS.

I use the official IL2 Teamspeak. I like it because it is reasonably well established. There I regularly meet with a few players I often fly with, players I sometimes fly with and occasionally with players I have never flown with.

I have used Discord successfully, though I did find it a bit confusing as there was stuff all over the place and ...anyway... I might just need to get more acquainted with it. But, the actual functionality of Discord is not really what I wanted to talk about.

I suppose if people want to fragment into their private Discord and TS channels, then that is up to them, of course. Personally, I'd prefer to see more people in one place, so that we may coordinate ourselves better - and I think that'd be more fun. I think it's a shame that players wanting voice comms find the expected place for voice comms (official IL2 server) empty. That can't be good for the health of multiplayer in a small niche like this game and that is evident with my experience and obviously that of the O/P. I would encourage more people to use the main Hub - official IL2 TS.

The beauty of discord lies on the far left column where all your different servers youve been invited to live. Its so easy to hop from discord server to discord server and get a coordinated effort going. This is where the chat really shines IMO. If you use the app on your phone, you have all this coordination, a text away. Ive noticed exponential increase in the dudes I fly with participation in the social aspect alone. It builds a community eventually, and wallah you get what u wanted.

Those same players on TS you see reguarly ONLY when on TS, you can always text them on Discord anywhere anytime.

Perhaps you are right Banzaii. Perhaps Discord is better than TS. I haven't given Discord enough time to be able to formulate a decent opinion myself.

However, do you see my point that the Discord is a separate entity to the advertised IL2 official TS server, yet the IL2 official TS server is the place a lot of players go to seek team mates? There is no protocol for a lone wolf player to meet up with potential team mates on voice comms with Discord. Discord relies on invitations.

The problem of cueing in players to discord falls on the server admins. Many of the servers we have been accustomed to have thier own established TS's. The Discord revolution has put many servers behind the power curve in having Discord servers avail. As far as server TS's are concerned.... They are typically where those interested should begin their search if only using TS. If that search is fruitless, try the official IL2 TS. No joy there?? Start berading all the lone wolfs in chat.

That seems to be a bit two-edged sword, no?

If you want a particular comms for a particular game, you go to that TS server. It is more limited, but that might be a good thing. On Discord you can get a notification regardless of which channel you are in. That can be a bit distracting if you are not flying a particular side, server, or even game. Superficially, it seems that Discord is more like a social-network-comms hybrid, whereas TS is more like a dedicated 2-way radio. Both are good, but the focus is different.

As for not being on the public TS (or Ventrilo or Discord or Skype or whatever...), sometimes you'll find some overly loquacious gentleman, or someone with sub-optimal sound settings. They tend to clear out the public voice-comm channels pretty quickly!

And, the public channels can sometimes be a little too public. (I stopped frequenting them because you'd be discussing the bomb run and some unscrupulous soul would use the information to switch sides and get a Ju88 kill at my expense.) That's certainly one reason why the community tends to form a mix of microcosms, as like minded individuals form their own squads, servers, groups, etc. and congregate on their communications medium of their choosing.

PS: the other thing I noted about Discord, was that they are not very transparent about the company behind it all, or their privacy/data collection. I certainly can't find any "Imprint", like you'd get on the TS site.

PPS: Curiously, these days I'm using TS2 (yes, 2, not 3) a lot because of XP10. The reason is that the API is simpler and it allows interfacing with toolsets, e.g. letting you have your radio controlled from inside the aircraft. Twirl the radio frequency dial in the cockpit and the TS2 channel changes automatically.

Well, sort of, yeah. I suppose one might like server admins to advertise all the different voice comms options on the briefing page. That'd be helpful, if not lengthy, clumsy, complicated, unreasonable and unlikely to happen.

I think using a publicised, well established, familiar and simple tool such as Teamspeak is probably a better idea for the multiplayer community as a whole.

I don't have a problem with Discord per se. The problem is no different than a private TS server/channel. But, it is evident from post number 1 that players are disheartened by the fact that there is no voice comms - nobody in there. I don't think the response 'Discord is better' helps the situation. If you stick Discord ads everywhere for your Discord channel - maybe.

Free is the key word. Discord is streamlined to stay in touch, just like Facebook and twitter keep us in touch seamlessly with the rest of the world.  Dietrich, your an admin on a huge TS community with SoW, your opinion is hardly subjective.  What is it privacy wise your sending over Discord anyways for it to be a deal breaker??Your playing a video game.  Everyone of your points against it can be configured by the server admin. The community is already fractured, TS can't keep up with everyone goining in a 100 directions.  Discord at least gives us a fighting chance of keeping the band together.

I dont have patience to retype this so I'll type a response on another forum."You realize you can use both??? Discord keeps people in touch better than any of the other Voice services.  You could use it as a chat room alone.  Just saying. Alot of squads use Discord to keep in touch as it keeps people more involved day to day, especially with the app.  Then for any formal stuff they use TS as it has better audio quality.  Its a tool, use it as you see fit, it is taking over though. "

The key thing is its FREEEEEEEE give it a try, if you dont like it, uninstall, but if it gives you a enjoyable experience, was it worth it?

Right, so now we are getting somewhere. So, the player who arrives in IL2 TS and finds there is nobody there - how does that player know where to go on Discord?

Answer: He doesn't. Because Discord relies on invites. Just like the one you sent me. And the player who doesn't get the invite - what happens to him? He leaves because he can't find any comms. And THAT is why Teamspeak trumps Discord. There is NO UNIVERSAL IL2 DISCORD SERVER.

Dude....its the same as an IP address for a teamspeak just a different name. There is an official one here.....https://discord.gg/DGdUrE8...........If the player shows up looking for comms clueless he asks is anyone on TS, the response in chat is the link for the discord channel.  Your argument is on thin ice. Read above, until servers start adding servers like TAW just did, people will not know. Here's TAW

https://discord.gg/W4jpnSC

Numbers dont lie,  their is WAY more participation in Discord these days compared to the official TS. Do some legwork on your own and find the servers until they add them to briefings.

I'm just trying to put you in the shoes of someone who is not in this thread. This seems to be a point that I appear to be having great difficulty getting across. Discord invites are plenty here - but imagine you go to an empty IL2 TS server - trouble is you lot are not there to jump out of nowhere with Discord invites.

That's all I'm trying to say.
