My New EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 Elite Card

So this VR addiction I have, is really starting to cost me.

 

Anyway I had been reading about the nice VR performance boost the new 1080 Ti cards provide. Now I had been running an EVGA 1080 FTW ACX3 card for the past year, and have been happy with it. And while I had pretty much decided no I was going to wait for next generation, I kept reading about all these great reports from folks who got the Ti regarding the performance improvement they got with it.

 

Well, temptation got the better of me. I had the funds available, so decided to go ahead and order a new EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 ICX Elite Card. I have been a fan of EVGA for many years, never had any issue with any of the graphics cards or motherboards. 

Placed the order last Thursday with EVGA, and received it yesterday evening. Got it installed last night, and this morning put it to the test with BoS in VR.

 

This puppy has all kinds of temp sensors, on the main screen of Precision XOC it displays the GPU, Power, and Memory temps. First thing I noticed was how cool this thing is running, idling across the board around 32c, highest it got in a couple of missions in BoS was around 52c. That new ICX cooler design apparently is doing a great job.

 

I am pleased with my boost clock, have not tried any overclocking at all, and it is boosting to 1961 MHz.  But for VR, those 50% more cores than the 1080 is what really is beneficial. 

Loaded up a mission and was surprised to find myself on the runway waiting to take off, already at 90 fps. Took off and flew the mission, and whilst it did not maintain 90 fps throughout the whole thing, it hovered around it more often than not, dropping only into the 70's and occasional 60's at times. 

I was very thrilled with my overall VR performance improvement with this card.

For anyone flying in VR, a 1080 Ti card is certainly worth a look, especially if you have something a little older than 1080 series. Of course, one needs some decent CPU  horsepower to push the thing, without bottlenecking. I am running an older i7 4820k @ 4.50 GHz and it seems to be handling it just fine.

 

For monitor guys, who are already getting really good fps, going to 1080 Ti may not make as much sense, especially from a 1080 series card to start with. But the Ti is indeed one beast of a card.

Very quiet, hardly hear it messing around at desktop.

When gaming course with the Rift I have my headphones in my ears, so would not hear anything anyway I guess.

Seems pretty quiet though.

I'm looking at the same card, my spec's are very close to yours except I'm Windows 7 64Bit, and right now I have 980Ti card 6g.

 

I searched for the best place to buy from and right now it's amozon, newegg is out of stock, except for a higher priced card and diff. mfg.  If you would where did you order your card from?  Thanks.

Congrats for you new acquisition. I think 1080Ti will help to achieve higher SuperSampling without affecting performance but I have not evidence of that.

 

Where did you read that 1080Ti was great for BoS? or it was for other games?

 

The problem with the on screen fps counter is that is very subjective to human being (we are not machines) and also the scenario/plane/etc.

 

I don´t know if you still keep for a while the 1080, but it would be really interesting to measure your performance boost 1080 vs 1080Ti with the Balapan track in VR and in monitor (you know):

It was mostly reading about how the Ti is better for VR. And I have certainly found that to be the case - based of course only on my observations and no real hard data like mentioned.  I can say I am not disappointed.

 

While it would probably be interesting I am not going to go through the hassle of changing the card out again to do a comparison. I am partially blind now and it is hard enough on me to just put a new component in these days lol.

What used to be a piece of cake for me is now quite the exercise.

In fact, I have recently conducted some supersampling experiment (reported in the mentioned thread above) and my 1070 could be the bottleneck now. So, a 1080Ti could be my next upgrade investment in the mid future...  (don´t tell this to my wife... )
