Looks neat, may have to give that a try!

I haven't seen it: is there a way to map the controls yet or do we need to use joy to key software or software for key mapping from our sticks manufacturer? Hope that made sense.

I think you simply have to key map the last commands in 'Main" menu to your joystick.I use the mouse to turn & fire guns...Oh you have to maps change ammunition option in "Weapons...."

There are basic tank controls that use the mouse and keyboard arrow keys for tanks. If you want to use your joystick to control your tanks turret aiming, one will need a program like JoToKey.

I know the devs don't have the time and resources...but a fully fleshed turret interior with VR would be awesome.

I checked it out, really amazing. As far as I know there isn't a VR tank simulator in the works... maybe they should relook this.

I cannot help but continue to think this would be a great opportunity to capture a totally untapped VR multi-crew tank sim market.  I have no doubt it's a small market; but a market it is.

There are a few arcade VR tank games that are getting released on the steam store (probably making decent money) and they look horrible.  Maybe it would even be best to break it out as some sort of separate game so it isn't buried under the il2 flight sim moniker and gets a "fresh start" in VR advertising.

I did see a job posting in May from Jason for an Eastern front tank modeler; which calls for "exterior and interior" work.  Wishful thinking I suppose.

Cheers

:o: , Really? I hope they hired a tank modeler.

In a somewhat related note, there is a VR multi-crew tank sim being worked on.  It's called Steel Heroes, and looks pretty promising.  I don't know that it's quite as well modeled as what War Thunder does with tanks, but at the moment it still looks pretty awesome I think.

Some info they posted on the Vive subreddit not too long ago

I think it would be even more awesome if they implemented something like this into IL-2 though.  The combined arms gameplay would be would be so fun.

What sort of twat drives his tank onto the top of a ridge before opening fire?    They could all have stopped mostly hull-down and survived longer.   I am not a tanker but even I know that! :-)

On a related note; try IronWolf VR for a fun little VR sub game.

I tried IL2 tanks again yesterday in VR.

Given how they were supposed to be a side project, the tank interiors are incredibly well detailed (except what's behind the driver, which is a flat grey wall).

The Panzer III side hatch is a really cool detail, it really works as a window to look through if you need it.

The only downside is the zoom implementation in VR which is not as good as non VR when you are trying to shoot at distant targets.

Definitely a diamond in the rough.

I know there's no major budget or manpower for the Tanks but with a little tweaking they could be great fun, in or out of VR.

Hooefully tgey managed to fill the 3d tank modeller position that was advertised.

Imho the ground detail is fine for tanking fun.

So far the only thing I really don't like about the tanks is that when you get shot with anything from an MG to a main cannon it shakes your head all around. I've never suffered from motion sickness in VR, but man is that just annoying feature. Is it something you can turn off?

As unlikely as it is to be realized, I love the idea of a fully detailed tank game for IL2. If you ran the tank-game on a separate server from the air-game you could raise the level of tank and environment detail - without impeding the air-game. The 2 servers exchange player position data etc so both are the same game, but the calculation workload is divided. You could even have more servers, similar to the Star Citizen work-sharing model. The tank game would also have to be restricted to a small area of the map and only a few tank types, so the density of detail could be increased (got to have the mud deform under tracks, and those destructable buildings :) The tank and air games would have separate textures and models, i.e: tank game has high detail tanks, but low detail planes - and vice versa, to optimize graphics memory usage.

...but it won't happen, of course.

I've set my hopes on "Hell Let Loose" instead, for now.
