Sold my OR a while ago. I mainly use VR for simming. Sadly the resolution is what kills it for now.

Immersion is absolutely unbeatable. But once you tried to attack groundtagrets only once you quickly decide against it.

This and contact spotting/identifying is simply not well possible.

I think the next iteration of enthusiast VR HMDs will bring a turn on that. Until then - I am out.

I had a similar experience and sold my Rift. Resolution was just too bad, no matter how I tried. Looking forward for sharper image.

Also understand the guys here who love it. It`s quite personal how you see these things.

So turn your upper body? Move your shoulders a bit, kick in the rudder (the rudder is important if you want to completely check the airspace behind you) and check your 6.

You are right, future VR headsets are going to likely be better, but this is not unworkable now.  I actually switched from a swivel chair to a fixed one as well to keep it more real, so I didn't just rotate in a way I couldn't do in a real plane.

Yes, and for anyone that asks me on Teamspeak, I always say - try it before you buy if you feel you will have any doubts. Resolution is an issue in the current generation.

Hmm, kind of like the actual pilots did...

I`m glad that I had it and know now what it is about. When things get a little better in hardware, I think theres no alternative for VR in these games.

Only problem is that is not so easy to do. Either finding someone that lives close enough and willing to let you try, or luck out and have a Best Buy or Microsoft store that is close by that is actually holding demos. And then the odds of getting to fly BoS at the demo are probably nil to none.

IMHO, this is probably the biggest reason VR is taking some time to catch on. I could have never imagined in my wildest dreams what the actual experience of gaming with a Rift would be like, until I took the chance and ordered one. And I was so hesitant to do so, had pretty much convinced myself I would wait until the technology improved over time and not get in on this generation. Boy am I so glad I did, in fact I have flown flight sims more and gamed with other games more now than I ever had in the past.

Some over on the Oculus forums have stated 6 weeks.

Not sure where they got that though, all I see on the website is for " Limited Time".

Don't think that will compete with the high end PC VR headset. I think it is Oculus broadening their scope to gain overall market share in VR.

But of course I can be and oftentimes have been - wrong.

That headset is a standalone, like Samsung gearvr. Oculus stated that gen 2 will come at the end of 2018, with Eye tracked FOV and higher resolution screens. HTC said so as well.

I pity those who try to rationalize why they do not or cannot buy the Rift now. They are missing out big time. And this ain't no fanboy talk either, my 4k 34" monitor was more expensive - yet I prefer VR. As a matter of fact, everybody who tried so far said so - I let friends playback flight recordings and they were stunned, watching the same flight multiple times even..

Yep and I am so looking forward to seeing what the Rift CV2 brings, you can bet I will be one of the first in line to order it.

If that ever turns up, then that is the version I will wait for a sale on...

If I only fly BOS I would probably upgrade and use VR . Bos is beautiful in VR no doubt.

But my next pc will be running newest X plane and DCS . The expenses will be sky high and in my mind the resolution simply is not good enough for me to bite on VR hype just yet.

I keep my old PC until I can afford the rig I want, and hope for a better version of VR by then. I can see why people like it. But to me the expenses is too high and gain too little

I have a 2k screen and I went back to it after trying VR for a week. Resolution was too low and blurryness on the edges too high. Its all matter of preference. Edited by 216th_Jordan

Don't you miss that one to one head tracking though ?

Yes absolutely. I like VR in general, just waiting for it to get a bit more refined.

I got no issues with that. What settings did you use ?

You say 2k screen , which is 1080p, and speak of low resolution - when VR has a higher res than that. Kind of contradictionary, isn't it?

Well the VR pixels are spaced out through about 100 degrees there abouts FOV. So you can still see individual pixels and the space between them. You quickly get used to it though.

There is no doubt that distant contacts are easier to identify on a screen, because they will appear to be better defined, but for me it's that sense of presence that VR provides. I am there in that cockpit, fearing for my virtual life. Gives me a real rush every single time.

That effect was never visible for me unless I concentrate on it, and my eyes are rated left 0 dpt, right 0.25 dpt, with the right one being my leading eye.

For me, the aircraft is easier to identify at the 3m focal distance in the rift, and harder at 80cm to the 4k 34" screen. Maybe that has got to do with my perfect eyes though.. I can imagine that focus is much different and worse, when using additional lenses, glasses, or even with contacts drying up. Or shifted towards nearer space regarding your eyes'/brain's focal attention, for those naturally short-sighted, this screen door effect might be an issue. For me, it is not visible.

But I had to relearn identification when switching from monitor to VR initially - I do so by shape now. Even then, in VR there are aircraft's flying around with 20m wingspan, while on the monitor they are up to 20cm and you're already "close". Hence, much easier to ID in VR.

I bought Rift and 4k at the same time. Just save yourself the hassle guys and don't get a new 4k monitor. Go instead for VR and a 1080ti. Otherwise, you'd regret it, trust me.
