taffy2jeffmorgan Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I was interested to find out the kind of support that was given to the Russians by both America and Britain through Lend Lease with regards aircraft between 1942-to-1944 Hawker Hurricane 2,952 Spitfire Mk V 143 Spitfire Mk IX 1,188 Bell air cobra 4,746 Bell P62 king cobra 2,400 Curtis P 40 2,097 B 25 862 Who knows ! we may have the Spitfire Mk IX one day ?
Jade_Monkey Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I believe a few p47 Thunderbolts made it to the USSR?
ShamrockOneFive Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Should be the P-63 King Cobra. Also the A-20, B-25 and P-47 were all sent to the Russians. They mostly used the A-20, P-39, P-40 and Hurricane in front line roles. A lot of this had to do with desperation in the first two years and any fighter was better than no fighter. The Spitfire V saw frontline use (though limited) while the Spitfire IX was used for PVO (civil defense) duties and didn't see much action. Neither did the P-47s.
Custard Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Who knows ! we may have the Spitfire Mk IX one day ? IIRC all of the lend lease Spit IXs were given to the PVO and hence saw very little, if any, action.
Royal_Flight Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I hope we will get to see a mkIX... when we finally get a Western Front scenario. Or P-47 in China-Burma-India, or at very least a Seafire in the Pacific...
Kurfurst Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 IXs did not arrive until 1944 to the USSR and then were used in the PVO instead of the VVS. Could be a collector, given how closely related the IX was the V.
Finkeren Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Here's a list of the total number of LL aircraft to the USSR (tanks too): https://ww2-weapons.com/lend-lease-tanks-and-aircrafts/
Godspeed Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 Few P-51 got there aswell and it did not match soviet needs. Few hundred P-47 served in soviet service as well
MiloMorai Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Few P-51 got there aswell and it did not match soviet needs. Few hundred P-47 served in soviet service as well 10 RAF Mustang Is were sent to the USSR - they were not used on ops - only for testing with the Northern Fleet.
Chief_Mouser Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Can we have a Hampden? Pleeeease. Always loved that odd-looking old crate. Cheers.
Lusekofte Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 (edited) Read Guy Gibsons book " enemy coast ahead. Did you know that they actually had a second pilot onboard. He served as a navigator , but was a trained pilot. The Hampden flew slightly sideways and was a handful to control on long flights according to the book. He wrote about a mine laying mission by the coast of Norway where they got intercepted by BF 110. I do not think he was in it himself , but according to him they did not attack from the rear, where the Hampden had good protection, the Gunners of the 110 took their MG from is mount and shot the pilot from the side, where it had no protection, they aimed for the pilot. This way they picked them down one by one. I have always been fascinated by this plane, I think it was because it was very much in comic books when I was young. 216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted July 23, 2017 Posted July 23, 2017 Interestingly, despite seeing no air combat whatsoever, many Mk. IX Spitfires remained in service after the war as high altitude trainers due to their good handling and performance in that range.
Reggie_Mental Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 (edited) Did we ever send new aircraft? I dont think the Soviets were too impressed with the worn out Spits and Hurricanes we sent them, lacking spares or manuals in Russian. Many had to be modified in the field before combat use, and were found to be unsuitable for rough field conditions and the Russian climate. As for the Hampden, they must have been very disappointed with that 'flying suitcase' Edited July 31, 2017 by Reggie_Mental
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I *think* the Mk Vs were second-hand while the IXs were new.
1CGS LukeFF Posted August 2, 2017 1CGS Posted August 2, 2017 I *think* the Mk Vs were second-hand while the IXs were new. The Mk Vs were Desert Air Force veterans.
